Oh Mama is a Traditional Golden American Lager brewed for the Steel City, a collaboration between Voodoo Brewing Co. (@voodoobrewery) and Styx (@Styxtheband).

The inspiration for the name and artwork comes from the Styx hit song “Renegade” which is regularly played at Heinz Field (@heinzfield) as an anthem for the Pittsburgh Steelers defense (@Steelers) during the 3rd quarter.

Big stovepipe 19.2 oz can on the clearance rack for 1$, hehehh. Pour is clear and pale. Alarming cream corn nose, a bit scary for a pale 6% brew. Even before I taste, I'm reminiscing of younger days when I'd score a quart of malt likkah from a bar in a paper bag! Yes, the first taste confirms my worries, this stuff is made to catch you a quick buzz. Those raters before me who said it was a cheap malt likkah , are not kidding. Sweet rude almost cloying alky laced brew bomb acting like its a beer. Its trying to induce a gag reflex, whew. Not as bad as Jaguar Ice, Lucky Number High Gravity Lager, Stack 101, Steel Reserve Original or even Dog Bite, but it is down there near the bottom of my least favorite malt liquor list. Yea, some malt liquors come across like a ruder american pale lager but this stuff is in a class all its own, its simply poor, bad, mediocre, substandard, second-rate, and inferior. I just wish it had a bit more alky content for the awful, dreadful, horrible, horrid, miserable, horrendous time I spent with this concoction. There, you have it. Voodoo, I thought you were beyond stuff like this.

Taster at the COS taproom. Pours a clear, straw color, with a small, white head. The nose is corn, vanilla, grass clippings, and prickly pear. Sweet and sugary, with a mellow bitterness. Light, crisp, and clean. Simple and a bit overly sweet, but nice enough.

19.2 oz. can from Total Wine - Naples, FL. Pours a mostly clear gold color with a white head and decent retention. Decent lacing. Standard pale lager aroma. Basic pale lager flavor too, with a little bread in the finish. Fairly generic profile. A little malt sweetness. Minor acidic mouthfeel. Medium-light body. Medium carbonation. Not bitter. The 6.0% ABV is invisible.

Extremely sweet for a lager; we’re talkin’ bad malt liquor levels of corn syrup sweetness, almost Belgian-ish in its sugary front. Esters add a layer of fruit underneath, but the back end is clean to the point of nonexistence. I don’t like Styx and I don’t like their beer.

On tap pours out golden topped with a white head. Nose is a little wheat touch and some citrus zest. Taste is more of the light wheat cracked grain and some hops.

On tap at De Garde Ten. Pours golden with small white head that lasts. The aroma is straw, biscuit, grain. Light body, grass, straw, dough, crisp finish, very good.
