Bottle. Color: Lightly hazy dark golden / orange amber, white head. Aroma: Malty, yeasty. Taste: Malty, bread, some caramel, candy sugar, herbal notes, hoppy backbone. Moderate to over moderate sweet and bitter. Starting more sweetish, finishing more bitter. Medium body, average carbonation. Decent.

Bottle bought at the castle after pur visit and guided tour (worth it!) shared with Laura. Dark murky golden-ish color, full sized white head. Aroma and flavor are malts, caramel a bit, candy sugar, softly sweetish and a bit bitter. Quite solid I mist say.

White, bit fluffy head over metallic, well-carbonated copper beer; some lace. Alcohol, rainwater, aquarium water, waterplants, some grains, faint caramel. Sweet, alcoholic, grainy. Again rainwater and the aquarium nose returns retronasal. Mild phenols and watered caramel. Quite slick, even viscous, alcoholheat. Bit thirteen-to-the-dozen, for the visiting non-picky tourists. Txs to Stef!

‘Castle beer’ commissioned for the Reinhardstein water castle, a historic monument and tourist attraction just south of the Hautes Fagnes, the most elevated part of Belgium; thanks to tderoeck for this bottle! Moussy, thick and frothy, membrane-lacing, stable head, hazy peach blonde with ‘dirty’ beige tinge. Aroma of brown honey, Betterfood, dried thyme, dandelion, raw turnip, carrot, some rusty iron (oxidation I assume), brown bread, old biscuit, ripe peach. Sweet, fruity-estery onset, ripe apricot, fig, banana and vague medlar sweetened by candi sugar, medium carbonated with full, ‘fluffy’ mouthfeel; sweet brioche-bready, bit biscuity and caramelly malts under growing spicy phenols (clove, nutmeg, thyme), eventually revealing a deeper, bit rooty, earthy hop bitter trail and lingering candi-sugary sweetness. Yeasty, phenolic-spicy and fruity Walloon ‘ambrée’, but notably sweeter than average for this substyle of Belgian ales; nothing unpleasant but – like its label – hopelessly old-fashioned.
