12 ounce can from Festival Northland, 3/20/23. I can tell this is the new one. It says “high quality” and “low impact” on the can. Also, it doesn’t smell like fried chicken. The original always smelled like that to me for some reason. This one smells like corn, cereal grains, sugar. Taste is corn, grain, cereal, plum. Clear gold, medium tan head, average retention. It’s fine, but not what is used to be for sure. 20.7k!

Pours clear, deep gold with a one finger white head. It has a mild grainy, bready malt aroma. The flavor is similar along with some mild hop bitterness. It’s light bodied and crisp. This bottle was quite fresh and I was thirsty after a run, so as an easy drinking light bodied brew, it really had every chance to be good, and it’s alright, pretty tasty for what it is. It’s still a lousy decision for the company to slap the name of their flagship beer for over thirty years on a different product. I was never a big Fat Tire drinker, but it obviously had its fans and that tradition should matter.

Not sure who this redesign serves. New Fat Tire is slightly lighter, slightly sweeter, with more prominent grain and ester notes, but doesn’t differentiate itself from any other easy-drinking golden ale on the market, and really isn’t terribly dissimilar from OG Fat Tire. Focus group brewing comes with being bought out, I guess.
