Clear blond yellow beer, big creamy white head, unstable, a bit adhesive. Aroma: banana, yeasty, a bit malty, grains, floral, some pears. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: a bit malty, bitter, yeasty, banana, grains, bubble gum, a bit metallic, meh. Aftertaste: malty, some banana, grains, more malts, a bit metallic. I guess this beer has/had it’s merit as a gateway beer into craft brews, but I can’t get really excited about it.

It has been awhile since I last had Fat Tire. I can’t compare to the previous version, but this one is pretty tasty. Pours clear burnished gold with a lasting off-white head. Aroma is yeast forward. Flavors are fruity.

12 oz. can from Publix. Pours a crystal clear gold color with a white head and very good retention. Good lacing. Standard pale malt aroma. Standard pale malt flavor too, like the aroma. Cleaner with barely a hint of any yeast notes. A very good, crisp and smooth lager. Medium-light body. Medium carbonation. Low bitterness. Repeatable. Much better than the original.

Can @ home. Slightly unclear golden body under a fine white head. Aroma has malt, esters and feels a bit perfumed. Taste is medium sweet malt, grain, cereals, some esters, Belgium yeast, slightly fruity, sugar and moderate bitterness. Medium body and same aftertaste. Nothing outstanding in any direction, but still a nice, well made, easy to go beer. I do have a little soft spot for this one without any real reason.

So I've been a little out of the loop regarding the news that NB has made a big change to Fat Tire. Can't say I cared a whole lot. I was never in love with the original version, and never really tasted any Belgian yeast in it despite its supposed origin story. So here's the new one, and yea, there's a belgian yeast at work here, very lightly phenolic with some sugar and dough, a very light fruit ester. It tastes more Belgian too, less hoppy than before, lighter body. Strange body, has a slicky watery character. Low carbonation I guess, despite the big fluffy head. Flavor is vaguely yeasty and doughy, leading to a low bitterness finish that lingers with just a hint of ester. This might be preferable to the old version, but I like to go against the grain. But either way, its still no great beer. 6 pack cans from a Wawa in Florida

On tap at New Belgium - Denver Airport, pours a clear pale golden blonde with a small white head. Aroma is somewhat estery, with soft candi sugar, biscuity malt and gentle Belgian yeast esters. Flavour is dry, with soft Belgian yeast expression, low residual sweetness, and some gentle bready/doughy notes. Very clean and reliable. The fact that this is so ubiquitous is a testing to marketing though, as this is very ordinary.
