A Double IPA with Australian Hops

Australia is well-known for being the home of flora and fauna that exist nowhere else on earth. Among these creatures (both creepy and cuddly), you can also encounter some unique and highly sought-after hop varieties. Only in Oz can you find Galaxy, Ella and Vic Secret hops, which lend striking tropical fruit, citrus and peach flavors to this booming behemoth of an IPA. Originally released to commemorate our 19th Anniversary, this is a recipe that’s garnered constant rumblings requesting its return, as steady and powerful as the sound of a didgeridoo…

Keg at Bazil’s, 7/7/23. Clear gold, medium beige head, good retention. Aroma of resin, pine, “fruit.” Not quite sure what I meant by “fruit.” Taste is pine, resin, stone fruit. Lingering bitterness. Nice.

Can, 12fl oz from Westhill Service Station. It pours clear copper/am er with a decent fluffy white head. The aroma is fresh, fragrant, gooseberry, white grape, melon, twist of lemon, pomelo, sappy and some pine. The taste is firmly dry with a big slap of bitterness which lingers throughout, green, weedy, leafy, green fruits, gooseberry, white grape, greengage, sappy, pine, pithy, zesty, grapefruit, lemon peel, pomelo, peppery spice and boozey warmth with a drying, bitter linger. Medium body and average carbonation. Nice and punchy on the bitterness front. Satisfying.

Draught @ Dive 96 Bar, Manhattan (6/27/23). Clear golden with a creamy white head, faint piney aroma, adequate carbonation, bitter citrus peel taste with floral hops, thin body, long bitter finish. Good DIPA.

Pour is a clear orange with a large white head. Aroma is stone fruit hops and white sugar. Flavor is more stone fruit hops. It's not sweet but rather bitter as all get out. Finish is a harsh hop burn. This was not for me. If you are missing bitterness in your IPA's give this a try but this was a bit of a palate wrecker for me.

Keg at The Waterloo Tap, 28/06/23 ... @£9.50 a half!!! Light golden orange with a decent white head. Nose is grass, grapefruit, pine needle, bitter orange, ripe melon. Taste comprises mixed tropical fruits, mango, melon, papaya, pine needle, west coast vibes, toasted malts, grapefruit. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close spiked with dankened come lightly resinous hop bitterness. Not bad.

By the IBUs I assume this beer leans West Coast style. Found at my main craft beer shop these days, I am ready with my Cowtown snifter for a sampling. The pour out of the 12 oz can is a distinctly clear, gold liquid completed by a creamy head of Arctic white foam that slowly settles. The scent brings an interesting mix of pine, tropical, grass and maybe some grain. I take a drink. Definitely hoppy, a lot of bitterness, a small pineapple sweetness, white bread, malt and field. The way I like IPAs, just saying.
