Forget everything you know about stout. Forget what you think it tastes like. And forget having to go to Dublin to get a good pint of it. There’s a new stout in town, and it’s demanding your attention.

Chocolate and extra dark crystal malts give layers of roasted, toasted coffee and cocoa, with a hint of caramel coming through. Classic stout, brewed in and for this century. Old dog, new tricks.

Can from Drankenhandel Leiden. Light and roasty with chocolate, some coffee, burnt/ashy notes. Tad caramel. Mild sweet, good bitterness. Easy.

Can. Almost black, creamy, thin and velvety foam. Aroma: burnt barley, a little coffee and chocolate, a light herbal note of hops. Taste: coffee drink made from burnt barley, coffee without sugar and a bit of dark chocolate, drinkable.

Can from the onlineshop. Looks good. Beer in the glass deep black, nice creamy head. Mild roasty malty aroma. Starts fine malty, roasty, sweetish notes. Mild smokey touch. Finish a bit washy, less malty, shy roasty aftertaste. Starts good, finish could be more intense.

On tap at Heim Hamar. A black one topped by a dense finger thick dark beige head. Lacing. Burnt, roasted malts, dark chocolate, some coffee grit. It's rather thin on the palate, quite dry, but sweeter than Guinness. Soft carbonation. Dark chocolate and coffee grit flavor, but mostly burnt and roasted malts. Lasting finish. A bit thin but quite decent anyway. 241025
