Starr Hill’s Dark Starr Stout has won more national and international awards than any other Dry Irish Stout in the country. Brewed with roasted barley, and with hints of coffee and dark chocolate, it packs a robust taste into a surprisingly light body. This signature brew pours like velvet and drinks like a slice of grandma’s pumpernickel bread.

Total Wine & More, Fairfax 12oz: Pours a blackish color with a small brownish head. Aroma is lightly of chocolate, a hint of smoke, and roasted malts. Pretty easy drinking stout, which doesn’t try to get too intense and stays pretty simple. Tiny bit of sweetness and chocolate. Nice body. Not bad. I regret not trying the Jameson-aged version of this when I had the chance. Also, ’tis nice to see another Grateful Dead influenced beer.

big dark pour from a bottle with a giant floating dark tan head. looks delicious. head goes rocky. this stuff smells like a good stout. decent initial taste impressioms. seems like more than 4%. lots of personality but it never tries to get over on ya. perhaps i do taste a tad of tartness in there, nice touch. never gets nasty. some co2 but not much. overall decent stout.

Bottle. Clear black body with mahogany highlights. Short beige head, rapidly diminishing. Light aroma of roasted malts, weak coffee, dark chocolate. The flavor is lightly sweet and lightly bitter. It finishes lightly sweet, lightly to moderately bitter. Medium body, watery texture, moderate carbonation. Dry finish along with lingering roast bitterness and some metallic notes. Hint of nail polish remover. Average.

You don’t find dry stouts as often as you used to, especialy draft dry stouts that are NOT nitro’d, so imagine my surprise. Very nice, medium roast with a soft and light palate that is not thin or creamy, has that little bite of astringency from the dark malt but not overdone.

Bottle: Poured a deep oil black with a creamy tan head. Aroma is roasted barely with hints of dark chocolate. Taste is very gritty and roasted, however if you sit between sips the dark chocolate and coffee hits you in the back of the mouth. Very nice beer.

I got this 12 oz bottle in a trade with Kajll. Pours deep amber and with tiny, thin tan head. The aroma is a very weak chocolate, some burnt malts to go along with mildly roasty malts. The taste is smooth and silky with some burnt malts, a bit of coffee and a touch of roasted malt. It gets very thin into the finish with lingering burnt malts and a nice dryness that I like. Overall a good stout with some drinkability.

Bottle thanks to travita. Pours with a fading tan head over a brown body. Aroma is earthy, and nearly brett, with some chocolate. Taste is cardboard, faded, watery and a touch thin. Might be infected or old. Didn’t really enjoy it at all.
