The Brown Ale is a traditional beer related to the first beers ever brewed commercially. Brewed with an interesting blend of malts, including pale two-row Harrington, Metcalfe, and Maris Otter malt, Caramel, Munich, and roasted Carafa malts, the Brown Ale shines with a deep mahogany luster. The malt flavor is complex and deep as well, with notes of biscuit, nut, and caramel. With moderate hop bitterness, a deep malt body, and a fruity ale fermentation character, the Samuel Adams Brown Ale satisfies the soul and doesn’t overwhelm the tongue.

This beer has a kind of thick head that actually descends actually. Has an amber brown colour and has an earthy beer smell that ain’t that strong. Not very bitter, but definately a little bit on the bitter side. Has a little porter like taste on the finish (standard coffee+chocolate thing). Not overwhelming, but there is a little taste of alcohol at the end, little sweet right around there. Overall a pretty good brown ale.

A dark clear brown ale with a thick lacing moka head, quite striking. A noted chocolate milk aroma, very sweet and pleasant. In mouth, a crisp malt with light metallic hopping in attack, finishing quite rapidly, followed by some mellow nut/roasted coffee in finale. A decent brown. Body is a bit thin, but overall well balanced.

I did not enter in to this one with much hope as I am not overly fond of brown ales in general and had some reservations about this brewer making one. Sampled from a 12 oz brown bottle this beer poured a dark brown color with a medium sized tan head. The aroma is malty, tangy and a bit vegetal. The flavor is malty, lightly roasty and again a bit vegetal. There is a tangy finish. Lived down to my expectations.

The nose starts off with a touch of bittersweet cocoa in the nose, a hint of stale toffee and perhaps a light floral character from hops. Semi-appealing chestnue hue, with medium rocky eggshell head. Semi-soft palate, but a bit of carbonic bite detracts. Very little sweetness up front - an initial dry cocoa airiness leads right into a mild hoppy finish. Light bitter finish, with just a hint of the kind of astringency you get from straight cacao. On the whole, a fair brown ale that lacks the character it could have.
