【名前の由来】

重苦しい伝統から一気に解放されるように、自由な発想で新たな道を築く。そこにはなんとしてでも自らの力で切り開くのだという強い信念と行動力を持つものだけが導かれるのだろう。IPAの陽気な味わいとは裏腹に、それが生まれた背景には、そうしたぴりっとした空気が漂っていたのかもしれない。

【醸造家の声】

時代ごとのIPAのトレンドに焦点をあてた六人の変革者シリーズ。前作の舞台、英国から現代のIPAが産声をあげたアメリカ西海岸へ移動します。 1970年代から80年代にかけて、アメリカ西海岸で松脂や柑橘香をもつ新種の実験的なホップを用いたビールを造る新興醸造所が現れ始めました。その黎明期には、今日スタンダードとされるIPAが生まれたのと同時に、スタイルとしてのIPAを確固たる存在にするホップのバラエティが広く知られることになりました。 それを決定づけることに一役を買った存在に、「カスケード」ホップが挙げられるでしょう。サンフランシスコのAnchor Steam醸造所が造ったLiberty Aleは、このホップを最も効果的に使った最初のビールでした。今回私たちが造った「開拓者」でも、このビールから得たインスピレーションを大きく採用しました。 初期のLiberty Aleの特徴である、淡い色味であること、煮沸時とドライホップ両方でカスケードホップを使うこと、そして苦み指数IBUが50ほどであることを今回の開拓者のレシピに取り入れ、その時代を代表する味わいを意識しました。少しのアレンジとして、カスケードの他にIdaho 7という種類も加え、ホップ感に深み与えました。この開拓者では、Liberty Aleのクローンのようなビールを造り出すことを目的としておらず、あくまでもクラフトビール界にとって大きな出来事となった一時代の雰囲気を感じてもらえるビールになればと考えています。知っている人なら、飲んだ瞬間にかつて飲んだLiberty Aleだ！と懐かしい気持ちになるでしょうし、初めての方ならきっと純粋なIPAの美味しさを体験することと思います。

[Naming]

While the IPA was invented in the UK in the 1800s, it was a dying style when it was reinvented in California. Perhaps fitting for America's beginnings, a style largely outcast in its home country, this style became a real pioneer in its new home, and would go on to change the face of beer around the world.

[Brewer's Voice]

For the second release in our Innovators series, we look to the West Coast of the United States. It is here starting in the 1970s and 80s that the fledgling craft beer industry was starting to use "experimental hops" with piney and citrus-like character. It was this experimentation that gave birth to not only IPA as we know it now, but also all the new varieties of hops that now typify the style. The hop that gave birth to it all was Cascade. Anchor Steam, a brewery in San Francisco, was one of the first to use this hop exclusively in one of its releases: Liberty Ale. It is to this pioneer that we looked for inspiration for this brew. The majority of the recipe emulates what the original Liberty was known for: light color, Cascade hops in the kettle and dry hop, and 50 IBUS, which was unheard of at the time. We didn't try to brew a clone of Liberty but tried to keep the essence of what it meant for the craft beer industry. To Cascade we added a touch of Idaho 7 for a bit more depth of hop character. Other than that we changed very little, so who knows, perhaps this beer tastes like the first Liberty Ale that came out of Anchor Steam!
