Can from Westhill Service Station. It pours a lot darker than expected.... darkest brown, almost black with a tan head. The aroma is bitter - sweet, chewy, toothy, some liquorice upfront, umami, dark and dried fruits, plum, fig, raisin, sultana, damp oak, dull vanilla, fruit cake, black bun, treacle tart, roasty, coffee grounds and a touch of praline. The taste is rich and toothy, chewy and rich, bitter, roasted malt, toasted oak, bitter, umami, decent hit of liquorice, oak spice, dried fruits, fruit cake, black bun, charred wood, as it warms it gets fruitier, plum, prune, date, touch of dried fig, berry, cacao nibs, toffee crisp, light tannin and some alcohol warmth with a toasty finish. Fulsome body and fine, massaging carbonation. Rich and toothy. Nice depth of flavour. Enjoyable.

Can from Appellation Wines. Appearance - deep brown almost black and opaque. Decent tan head. Nose and taste - two passes at this one. On the first it was much more stouty and lacking the expected chewy toffee of the style. Burnt wood and roast along with molasses. On the second pass there was substantial toffee but still a fair amount of roast and molasses. Palate - full bodied, chewy middle and dey roast finish. Overall - a bit challenging but worth the effort.
