The Flavor That Made You Fall In Love with Craft Beer

Samuel Adam’s Boston Lager is approachable, complex, and smooth with the perfect balance of caramel malt sweetness and spicy hop bitterness. First brewed in 1984 in our founder Jim Koch’s kitchen at a time when there were under 100 breweries in the United States, Samuel Adams Boston Lager helped pave the way for the American craft beer revolution.

A smooth, German-style lager with slightly sweet roasted malts, notes of caramel, toffee, and a distinct noble hop character with subtle piney citrus. It ends with a crisp finish that makes you want another.

Admin Note: Samuel Adams remastered the recipe for Boston Lager in 2023. In summer of 2024, the remastered recipe remains, but the "Remastered" marketing is now absent from the packaging. This entry is for the remastered recipe marketed now as "Boston Lager".

Surprised to learn this is a new version. i had it before, liked it quite much. Found a bottle in the airforce base - shop in Germany, no idea if it's fresh / kept well during transfer, but I figured what's there to loose?

So, (re) rating this beer, unexpectedly, even thouhg it's been years since I've had it (the old version) so can't really compare that well. This one pours bit unclear amber. Creamy, stable white head. Scent is bready, caramel malts, but seemingly crisp and quite sharp. Some (earthy) hops. taste is sharp, bit bitter, crisp maltyness but also some oxidation beyond these flavors, stale honey-maltyness, even touch of cardboard. guess it didn't travel all to well indeed, or it's just less good than I remember it to be. Still, it has a certain crispyness, though. It falls a bit flat in the end, no lingering bitterness, sweet-ish even - might be the oxidation again. Meh... not very happy with this, but I knew it was a risk. Might try again if i'm ever getting one I know is fresh.

Clear dark golden to amber colour, moderate sized ecru-ish white head; aroma of floral, fruity, some hay, bread crusty and nutty notes; taste of hoppy bitterness, rye bready, maly syrupy, some roasted nutty and hints of honey notes; good lager

Draft @ The Perfect Pint West, NYC. Clear copper sporting a decent white head. Aroma of malts, caramel and some citrus fruits. Taste of malts, lemons, caramel finishing a little bit on the spicy side. Comparetively strong bitterness. Strong carbonation. Balanced and enjoyable.

Slightly spicy aroma. Taste is moderately bitter, with a spicy and floral hop flavor. Caramel sweetness and wood balances underneath. Seems to have more hop bitterness than the previous version.

Poured an amber color with a small white head. Aroma was light juicy hops, bitter orange peel, sweet, pleasant. A bit less malty than the older version. This is fine, probably more in tune with today's palate than what was, at the time a very hoppy lager.
