BramBrass Dark Knight

Dark Knight

BramBrass in Heestert, West Flanders, Belgium 🇧🇪

Belgian Style - Quadrupel / Dark Strong Regular
Score
7.29
ABV: 10.0% IBU: - Ticks: 13
Dark Knight is the second beer in the core range (fixed range) of BramBrass, after the Rik & Raf triple. This time it is a copper-brown quadruple. Despite its complexity, the beer is also smooth drinkable. This combination makes it dangerous to run into the man with the hammer, because the beer has an ABV of 10%. The beer tastes malty with sweet notes of dates, figs and caramel and a long, soft finish.

Roodbruin troebel bier zonder schuim. Valt me enigszins tegen.

Bottle at home shared with Laura. Odd color, kind of orange brownish color, very odd. Very light as well for a quad. Aroma is, well, normal for a quadrupel. Malts, sweetish hints of brown candy sugar, caramalts, lightly boozy. I quite like this one. Well brewed. Good quad I'd say.

On tap at the Brugge Beer Festival 2024, Brugge, Belgium. A very dark brown coloured pour with a medium off white head on top. Sweet, malty, caramel, dark fruit taste/aroma. A decent Quad from Brambrass.

Dark brown colour, beige foam. Sweet, notes of dried fruit, brown sugar, some bitter hoppy notes in the finish. Good quadrupel.

Quadrupel by BramBrass, bottle bought at Van Callenberge in Stekene. Medium thick, moussey, greyish white, slowly breaking, irregular head over a clear, chestnut-tinged warm amber coloured beer - clearly on the paler side of the quadrupel spectrum. Aroma of candyfloss and candy apple, caramel candy, dry biscuit, clove, rosehip, liquorice, furniture wax, wood glue, Kirsch, brown honey, almond and - alas - pronounced solvents (the wax and glue again) which even produce a slight headache if I keep sniffing it for too long... Sweet onset, clean and 'candied' with notes of candied cherry and baked banana, sticky white candi-sugary sweetness on top with very slick, almost glueish, bubblegummy body, moderately carbonated; sweet caramelly malts with a light biscuity edge and, in the end, a very mild toasty bitterish touch. Meanwhile candyfloss and bubblegum persist, while spicy notes of clove and liquorice pop up retronasally - until, unfortunately, those strong solventy effects return, glue- and varnish-like. Mild leafy hops add soft bitterishness and warming, liqueurish alcohol glows at the back without becoming too intrusive. Sweetness lingers - perhaps a tad much so even for this style, which is of course generally typified by sweetness; somewhat odd and very clean, clearly inspired by the La Trappe pedigree and the way American(-inspired) brewers interpret the style. I personally prefer the darker, fruitier, maltier 'Belgian' side of quadrupel, but this one is arguably well made, just a bit too bubblegummy and solventy for me - though who knows, these issues may improve a lot with prolonged cellaring. I should try to find that out with another bottle.

My 33 cl bottle was found at The Bottle Shop in Bruges last September thanks to a helpful saleslady. I've saved this tasting until tonight, wanted to get into the winter with it. And so I have. A tulip glass is in place to catch the pour and I see a light brownish red body, somewhat unusual for a quad, finished by a thin skim of silvery bubbles. The scent contains plenty of ripe fruit, yeast and berries. I take a drink and taste dates, raisins, wheat bread, a bit of toffee, leather and malt. Not a spectacular quadrupel but quite solid. And not as thick in sensation as I would like. There is enough bitterness at the end to make mention of. Finding a beer like this is a pleasing part of my travels to Belgium.

330mL bottle, pours a clear darkish ruby red with a small beige head. Nose reveals toasted chestnuts, some dark red fruits, red berries, and dry toasted caramel. Flavour is rich, with lots of red berries, toasted chestnuts, dry caramel, and alcohol. It's less spicy and yeasty than a typical quad, but drier and fruitier. Very nice.
