Saddle up, Cowboys. There’s a new barley wine in town. This full-bodied outlaw of a drink combines a rich toffee caramel biscuit base with layers of tropical mango, citrus and spice for a warming finish. And galloping in at 9.5%, it’s not one for yellow bellies. Guaranteed to get your boots tapping and your knees slapping, let’s get this hoedown started.

Keg at BD Waterloo, 10/05/23. Copper pour topped with an off white head. Nose is booze, caramel, stewed fruits, toffee, dates. Taste comprises alcohol, fruit cake, sultanas, dried fruit rinds, caramel, toasted brown sugars. Full bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close with a kiss of alcohol. Okay sipper but rather a basic model and lacking depth.

On tap at Brewdog - St Pauli (Hamburg), pours a clear copper with a small white head. Aroma brings out brown sugar, toasted caramel, bready malt and some resinous hops. Flavour is hoppy for a barley wine, with plenty of resinous hops upfront, followed by bready malt, some brown sugar and a dry caramel. Finishes resinous, with a fairly attenuated finish for the style. Solid.

Tap at Brewdog Brussels. Really ungood. Low carbonation, thin body, lots of booziness. Feels watery, lots of phenols. Some citrusy fruity hops character is trying to save it, but unfortunately it is a fail. Really bad.

Can 33 cl. Pours a clear amber with an off-white head. Lightly spicy, caramelly nose with a licorice touch. Medium body, slightly biscuity and toffeeish, but not really sweet. Very solid, hoppy finish. Slick without much character, but ok. 030523

clear amber to chestnut colour, half inch of creamy beige-ish ecru head; aroma of intensive soy sauce, some yeast, marmalade, caramel and raisins; taste has the same notes with intensive hoppy bitterness; strange one with this soy sauce dominance...will not be my favourite...

Blik 33cl thuis. Flink hoppig, maltig, vrij zoet, licht pine, gele grapefruit, marmelade, caramel, toffee, fruitig, vrij droog, redelijk bitter. IPA-invloeden. (1-4-2023).

Draught at TLVCBF, clear intense brown colour, citrusy hops, lots of caramel, dried fruits and a bit of burned sugar, quite sweet but not too much. Surprisingly nice.

Not really a barleywine. More like an ordinary dipa. Disappointing style name. Brewed as a decent ipa. Bierkonig ams

Keg at Canary Wharf. Almost clear deepish amber beer, small bubbly cream colour head. Palate is smooth and semi dry, decent fine carbonation. The malts are smooth, a little creamy sweetness, touch of caramel. Some vague marmalade on the back end along with a little boozy spice. Fuck me Brewdog! Dull and without any maturity or malt depth.

Blik gedeeld door Roelzie. Het is een helder amberkleurig bier met een volle beige schuim. Het heeft een aroma van hop en gras. De smaak is vol fruitig, grapefruit achtig, zoet, toffee, caramel en hop.
