Green bottle from Toal Wine in Roseville, CA. Pours pale gold with a foamy white head. Skunk? Or grass? In either case the aroma is not strong. It’s a little earthy, musty - but that’s not strong either. Med body. Slightly bready. It’s not skunk. It’s sort of earthy grassy hop. Or maybe it is skunk. If so, it’s not got the burnt rubber hint I usually associate with skunk. Finishes bitter. Pretty good for a pale lager, tho the aroma is confusing.

50 cL bottle. Pours clear and yellow with a creamy white head. Mild sweet cornish aroma. Flavour is cardboardish dry and mild spiced. Light bitterness coming through towards the finish yet also a vague fruity accent. Might be a good beer if it wasn’t filtered.

Bottled. Golden colour, rich firm head. Bready malt aroma. Sweet with pleasant deep, papery malt flavour and soft mouthfeel. Lightly buttery and lightöy yeasty, but the cellary flavours I associate with many Zhigulevkoe versions I’ve tried is thankfully missing. This beer is actually quite good - I give them special credit for the malt profile.

2004 bottle from Mountainview plaza wines. Medium-sized white head slowly recedes to nothing, with light lacing. A deep yellow, with light copper-orange highlights and a touch of haziness. Aroma of mineral water, soft lemon and light honey, a bit of crisp lager yeast and hints of dirty, earthy hops (or maybe just dirt). Light touches of DMS grace the palate at most; this is by no means a bad sample. Flavor begins with a large malt sweetness, mildly grainy (vienna-like malt) and fluffy in the mouth at first. The carbonation in this beer dies off too quickly for my liking, however and much of the glass is quite watery. Hints of lemon and lightly grassy hops, getting more watery as it warms. Finishes with some paper and mop bucket flavors, but they arent dominant, really. My biggest complaint is that it just gets too watery. Medium body at first, though. I enjoyed it, it certainly wasnt skunked or sour or adjunt ridden.
