Two half-litre glasses in The Golden Angel, a bar/restaurant full of ’Golden Angels’ hanging from the ceiling and in pictures: Munsterplatz, Freiburg. Wet and cold Wednesday in Sep 2013, just before hitting the near-by Ganter Brauereiausschank. Clean, clear and bright golden: white head on each pour. I thought it sweet and very nice: mild semi-sweet malty nose with hints of the sweeter citrus fruits. The taste was also malt sweet, but with a good crisp hop note to keep the sweetness in check. Pleased we wandered in the place: didn’t expect to find a new beer in such a joint.

Brown 50cl bottle, well in date. The first of my German Beer Reviewing Evening on 20th Feb 2009.. Poured into my Budweiser Budvar 0.2 litre stemmed tulip tasting glass (3 times). Clear golden yellow, fairly pale and bright looking. A large white head sat on top of each pour, sadly the heads all fell away as I drank down each beer, leaving a small collar and some good lacing. A very slight floral aroma, but not enough to get excited about, otherwise there was no smell, just like most lagers/helles/pilsners. Dry and refreshing, sharp and crisp. No huge flavours to talk about, but a good example of a German light lager/pilsner. No great body or depth, just a pleasant lager, easy to drink. The 5.3% is just about detectable. My third glass was taken with some vintage Stilton and dry biscuits, they complimented each other very well. Now to have some water to clean out the mouth before my next German review.

Well carbonated lager with a regular aroma. Pours yellow with a small head. Probably quite standard stuff in Germany but tasty enough elsewhere.

500ml bottle. Pours light gold with a large, fluffy head. Aroma is minerally with some grassy hops. Taste has minerals throughout. Full in the mouth. Very good pale lager.

The beers 100th rating! 50 cl bottle brought to me by my friend who lives in Scotland. Nose is grassy hops, sweet malt, and light yeasty notes. Clear yellow with a big white head. Flavor is lightly bitter, lightly sweet, with a slight pepperiness and a tiny hint of cloves.

Golden color. The aromas of honey and tart fruitiness. Dryish flavor with bready and papery malts, herbal hops, some tart citrus and medium bitterness.

Draught@Euston Tap, London. Yellowish golden colour with a small white head. Aroma is malts, some bready notes, mild diacetyl/buttery notes as well as quite pleasant grassy/hayish hopping. Flavour is rather similar with the diacetyl being toned down a bit. A brew that’s actually a bit more to the Czech style than German.
