Blend of bourbon barrel-aged munichwines with honey. A collaboration with Cellarmaker Brewing.
Limitations, a collaboration with our good friends at Cellarmaker, is the first in-person collaborative brew at Private Press. Cellarmaker makes some of the best beer in the Bay Area, and I was excited to collaborate on a recipe that would push the limitations of munichwine in a new direction. We brewed separate batches of honey munichwine, one with California Toyon honey and the other with Meadow Foam honey. Each batch aged across a variety of different bourbon barrels for a year. Four complementary barrels established the base, and a barrel of barleywine really brought it all together. Bright notes of honey, vanilla butter creme frosting, red rope, and marzipan come together in this style-bending blend.
Blend:
DeJohnette (barrel #131) aged 18 months in Old Fitzgerald barrels
Dolphy (barrel #151) aged 12 months in Rittenhouse Rye barrels
Dolphy (barrel #153) aged 12 months in Elijah Craig 10 Year barrels
Dolphy (barrel #155) aged 12 months in Straight Edge 4 Grain barrels
Kirk (barrel #221) aged 5 months in Old Fitzgerald barrels and 8 months in Elijah Craig barrels

Rated at Platinum Bierstube. Sweet, sugary and syrupy with some bourbon and honey, hints of vanilla, toffee and caramel sauce. A bit heavy.

Bottle at Leeuwarden tasting. A "munichwine" according to the label??? So Munich malt Barleywine? Anyway.. Dark brown, opaque, almost black color, small beige head. Aroma is boozy, mint-ish alcohol dominates. Flavor is malts, booze, bourbon but again a sort of minty note to it. Sweetish, softly sticky. I quite like it. Not bad at all.

Flaska från staterna, 2022 b1. Lätt murken mörkbrun med vitbeige krona. Romrussin, bra med torkad frukt, massor av fat, Bourbon, snäll kryddighet. Elegant, snyggt sammanhållen. Mycket gott.

Bottle shared with Vin. Pours dark hazel with a small beige head and a bit of lacing. Aroma is malty and complex, toffee, honey, bourbon, oaky vanilla, wethers. Flavor is medium sweet, light bitter, not hot at all which is a bit scary. Medium body.

Tap at Ale Arsenal. Sweet aromas of vanilla, chocolate and rich bread. Black with brown highlights and a rim of off white head. Flavor is massively rich. Bourbon with coffee and chocolate. Lawyers if flavor. Dark fruit as it warmed. So delicious.

Poured from a 510 ml bottle. Aroma is definitely malt forward with lots of honey wheat bread notes along with some toffee, dark caramel, graham crackers and hints of chocolate and nuts. Medium light raisin and date notes with hints of prunes. Light bourbon and alcohol notes with faint oak. Pours a dark brown that's not quite black with brown hues on the edges with a medium small, fairly thick, dark tan head that recedes steadily to the edges where it lingers. No lacing and long legs. Flavor is fairly sweet with lots of dark caramel, toffee, toasted honey wheat bread, and graham crackers with lighter notes of chocolate and nuts. Moderate bitterness and medium light alcohol notes. Light bourbon and hints of oak. Medium light raisin, prune and date notes. Mouthfeel is full bodied and sticky sweet with medium light carbonation. Low astringency and medium low alcohol warmth. Overall, another great munichwine from PP. Nice, somewhat sticky, full mouthfeel with well hidden alcohol notes. Great malt character with complimentary bourbon and barrel notes.
