In August of 2020, we released our take on Black is Beautiful Imperial Stout with our friends at White Lion Brewing as part of an international movement to directly address police brutality and the legal injustices that American people of color face every day. This project saw participation from over 1,200 breweries in 22 countries, raising much-needed awareness for inequity and funds for organizations that are putting in the work towards equality and inclusion.

The founder of Black is Beautiful is Marcus Baskerville, Owner and Head Brewer at Weathered Souls Brewing. We got to know Marcus through this project and quickly became fond of his lineup of beers, in particular the impressive array of Imperial and Barrel-Aged Stouts that the brewery releases on a regular basis. When the opportunity arose to collaborate on a beer together, we noted our shared appreciation for BBQ and fused the storied traditions of pit smoking and stout brewing.

Featuring barley smoked on our Primitive Pit smoker over New England maple and oak, Feed Your Soul pours a deep, opaque black. The aroma displays a complexity achieved from the use of a variety of specialty malts. Rich baker's chocolate, caramelized brown sugar, sticky molasses, and freshly-ground coffee lead the way up front. An underlying complementary smoke profile drifts throughout each sip, never stealing the show, but rather adding nuance throughout the glass. Medium-bodied, with mild alcohol warmth capping off the finish, Feed Your Soul is a versatile beer, just as capable of pairing with BBQ on a summer's afternoon as it is slow-sipping on a winter evening.

Pours deep ebony into a tulip. Mocha head with little retention recedes to hug rim. Hot bourbon and sweet vanilla and milk chocolate aromas. Soft and thick with pit fruit, licorice, molasses and vanilla upfront turning to hot espresso and chocolate orange slices in the slick, lasting finish.

Draught at Fenway location, 8/26/21.
Inky black, untested clarity with a small, dark tan head that shows low-to-moderate retention.
Tar, salt, soy-like oxidation (light) and deep, well-integrated roasted barley notes provide a complex but very dense nose that still probably hasn't had time to breath and unfold fully even by the end of the glass. Malts don't seem too sweet, with light caramel and chocolate providing balance to the acidic/roasted notes and the light oxidation character also keeping it on the drier side. Alcohol well in-check and it's clean.
In the mouth it's very tar and salt heavy with bitter molasses and unprocessed cacao-like acidity. Plentiful sweetness does balance, however, adding milk chocolate/fudge and light caramel. Some dark fruit nuance deepens complexity with strong roast on the finish alongside light warming and moderate oxidation. Texture is soft, almost gritty at times, with low, engaging carbonation. Nice beer and I applaud Trillium's consistent release of non-pastry Imperial Stouts. Really have to take your time with this one.
