This is the thirtieth special ale from the brewers at Anchor. It is available from early November to mid January. The ale's recipe is different every year, but the intent with which we offer it remains the same: joy and celebration of the newness of life. In ancient times, trees symbolized the winter solstice, when the earth with its seasons appears born anew.

One more bottle courtesy of Irishboy. Pours with a large head. SImilar piney aroma with less chocolate though. Less sweetness all around actually. The carbonation is a bt livelier on this. Finish is a bit roasty. Still low bitterness. Really not much of difference from the 03.

12 oz bottle. Dark red brown body with a thick, light brown head. Roasted malt and vanilla aroma. Sweet, bitter and roasted flavor with well balanced character of herbs. Dry bitter aftertaste. A nice harmonic beer for the winter season and whenever you feel for it.

A pitch black beer with a huge brown head. The aroma is sweet with strong notes of herbs and spruce. The flavor is very sweet, but very soon a very strong spicy note hits you, at first with a herbal note, which in time is over ruled by a note of spruce, which leads to a dry bitter end, out of which grows notes of oranges and cloves. I find the body a bit thin.

Dark reddish brown with no head. A pleasnt aroma of fig, caramel and licorice. In mouth, a bland chocolate malt, astringent body, a tad unbalanced. Dégustation de Vieux Stocks III, Oct. 13, 2006.
