Scarlet’s Golden Mild. This is a special one! Scarlet is our Apprentice Brewer, who has been with us since mid-way through lockdown and has worked really hard both here in the brewery and at Nottingham Uni, where she’s due to finish her course next Spring. She’s ready to start formulating beers and this is her first, inspired by Victorian Mild ales (in which, if we’ve bored you with our historical facts before, you’ll remember that Mild means Fresh or Young beer, rather than Keeping beers which were aged and therefore sour). This is a golden, strong-ish, British beer brewed with Bramling Cross and Whitbread Goldings, along with Ragus Invert sugars which were traditionally used to up the booze back then.

440ml can. Hazy golden-amber, white head. Aroma of sweet bready malts, caramel, grassy hops, mild yeasty spice. Taste is more of the same, sweet bready yeasty flavours, mild almost-Belgian-like spice, caramel, grassy and floral hops, moderate bitterness. Medium bodied. Think this might be my first light/golden mild rating.

Silver bullet. Moderate haze on a fairly deep gokd. Fine white head is lasting and a little leggy. Nose has granary bread. Yeasty dough. Light caramel notes. Hops are floral and grassy. Taste is sweet up front with a yeasty twangy bitterness. Medium to full bodied with fine carbonation. Lightly oily. Moderate to full bitterness to finish. Well, she didn’t piss ball about with this, that’s for sure.
