Mackeson's Brewery of Hythe, Kent first released the beer in 1909. Whitbread acquired the brand in 1929. By the 1950s it accounted for half of Whitbread's production and was brewed in several of their breweries. In 1993 Whitbread moved production to their Castle Eden and Samlesbury plants. From May 1999, production was contracted out to Young's Brewery of Wandsworth. In 2001 Whitbread was purchased by Interbrew (now AB InBev) and since then brand has been shunted from plant to plant and is currently brewes at their Luton plant. A few years back, the alcohol content was dropped from its original 3% to 2.8%

Bottle. Poured black with a thick tan head. Slight aroma of malt. Sweetish malt taste, thin body, thinnish finish. A rather ordinary stout.

can at the Avon Combined Services Club, Clifton Bristol. Black with a slight, but tight tan head. Very easy drinking with sweet aromas of chocolate, milk and dark fruit. The flavour was much of the same with plenty of sweetness and some coffee roastiness. Not bad for such a weak ABV.

33cl can from Sainsbury’s on offer. Black with tan head. Heavily roasted malt aroma, but I detect some burnt cane sugar. Cigarette smoke on the aroma too. Hey, it’s a 3% stout. I think it’s fairly dirnkable. Not too sweet, some residual sugar in mouth. Fine

(Can 33 cl) Pours completely opaque black with a rough, beige head. Light aroma of butter with hard roasted malts. Light in body, a little low in carbonation with hard roasted malt accents - and again a little butter. Subdued bitterness. 140308

Deep black colour, a smokey roast malt nose, very mellow quite complex roast malt flavour. Probably the best beer in a CAN that i have had.
