330ml bottle from M&S - Headless flat black ale, no head, no life. Nose is lots of rich boozy cake fruit, malt and caramel. Loads of boozy warmth in the taste, not a robust palate as I expected, but nice solid and chewy just on the flavour alone.

Bottle. Branded as brewed for Marks and Spencer and 7%. Nose is oak, chocolate, slight vanilla, slight smoke. Taste is coco, slight cola, cherry, hint of smoke leading to sweet dark fruits and wood. Mouthfeel is fine. Marks and Spencer’s beers which are branded as their own, have the unerring ability to deliver substandard beers from decent brewers, this beer which has kept it’s brewer’s branding is much better. A decent barley wine, which feels a little underpowered,.

330ml bottle at home. Very dark brown, near black pour. No head initially, but a small creamy one appears (a good sign as far as I’m concerned in strong bottle-conditioned beers). Aromas of chocolate cake, plums, booze, almonds. Tastes very cakey, like christmas pudding. Woody too. Rich, sticky texture. Flat carbonation. Long sweet finish.

Bottle from bu11zeye. Who has given me wondrous beers, but I thank him especially for a rare real ale. Oh to be in England. Again. Pours cloudy dark brown with no head. Aromas of dark fruit and treacle. Med body. Flavor is very, very plummy. Dark malt. Touch of chocolate. But mostly very, very plummy. It’s delicious. Finishing towards dry. Somehow it’s related to a plummy Belgian Quad. Amazing stuff.

(Bottle, Monk’s Café Wallingatan, Stockholm, 1 June 2010) Dark brown colour with a reddish hue, creamy beige head. Malty, roasted nose with notes of dried fruit, caramel, raisins, chocolate and coffee. Malty, fruity taste with notes of dried fruit, wood, raisins, chocolate and a slight acidity with hints of red berries. Smooth bitterness in the finish. More than medium body, well rounded mouthfeel. Fairly sweet. Nice and well balanced old ale.

Bottle. Pours a dark brown color with a small off-white head. Has a roasted malty caramel aroma with hints of dark fruit and raisins. Sweetish malty caramel and dark fruit flavor. Has a sweetish and slightly roasted malty caramel finish with lots of dark fruit in the aftertaste.
