Bottiglia.

White Pony brews up some really good quadrupels, I always like sampling whatever I can get from them. This evening it's an imperial stout from a nice Belgian seller. I lift the cap before pouring inside of a globe glass, dark brown in color with an appropriate skim of fawn tan foam. The scent is heavy with chocolate malt, berries and grain. The taste is all right, the sensation less so. Chocolate of course, raspberries, grain, straw, a hint of booze, a touch of wood, but all somewhat subdued. Surprisingly thin. Something of a letdown unfortunately.

1 February 2020. At Brugs Bierfestival. Cheers to Anke, Kevin, Niels & Cynthia! Hazy black, lasting, thin, foamy, beige head. Aroma of wet toast, macadamia, wood, vanilla, varnish, bourbon, plum, tobacco. Taste has sweetish date, plum, fig with a solid nutty & chocolatey backbone; develops bitter toast, wood & something earthy, to end dry, more toasty with earthy hops, strong woodiness, almost tree bark-like, before whisky-like alcohol heats the throat. Medium to full body, oily texture, soft carbonation. Pleasantly surprised by WP's output at the festival this year, this is quite solid.

Not that well balanced... But overall, an okay BA oatmeal stout.

Bottle. Straight from the bottle. Aroma and flavor are sweet, sour, roast, booze, malt, fruits. Overall: good enough.

Bourbon barrel aged imperial oatmeal stout by White Pony, one of several new oak barrel aged projects apparently, bottle from Wijnegemse Drankenhal. Lightly lacing, very regularly shaped, dense and creamy, pale brownish beige head over a jet black beer. Rich, 'modern' and inviting bouquet of fondant chocolate, dried plums, leather, dry pipe tobacco, toffee, raisin bread, candied fig, bourbon, vanilla-coloured oak wood, granola, glue, bayleaf. Sweetish onset with sourish edge, dried figs, elderberries, dates but nothing cloying or overly sweet, sofly carbonated with a thick, viscous, creamy mouthfeel - the creaminess of which can be ascribed to the oatmeal. Very deeply nutty and toasty malt bittersweetness with black chocolate character and roasted coffee bitterness towards the finish, surrounded by a thin gravy-like umami accent; lots of warming yet completely non-astringent, evidently bourbon-flavoured alcohol in the finish, with lingering nuttiness and black chocolateyness as well as gently drying oak tannins. After their Gaverhopke period, which lead to more failures than successes for this beer company if you ask me, White Pony made the right move to Het Nest and ever since then, their beers have been silently but notably improving. This one is a textbook BBA stout, as if it had been brewed by some Scandinavian craft brewer; even if nothing innovative within this particular field, it has all the properties one would expect from the concept, executed in a rich and technically flawless manner. Cheers Roberto, this is delicious indeed!
