Bottle at the Pig and Whistle in Kyoto. Black with reddish tints and a low, thick head. Nice nose of chocolate, cocoa, cream, fruit, and a touch of veggies. Cocoa flavor, sweet but not overly so, with a light tang. Very creamy, vanilla and milk and light coffee roast. Dry finish with some hops. Light but full and smooth. Good.

Can, gift from Paula & Stuart. Dark brown body with a thin beige head. Steady carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of chocolate and vanilla. Flavour of cocoa, chocolate and coffee. Thin to medium body with a watery texture. Very fizzy. Itβs quite thin and overcarbonated, but the flavour is nice.

Cask at the White Horse, London. Pours rich brown with a moderate, beige head. Lightly tangy, dark malt aroma. Quite a sweet flavor, some syrupy cocoa, mocha, booze. Medium bodied with fine, lightly syrupy carbonation. Slightly sticky finish, candy, dark malts. There is some subtle tang, some tar, plenty of mocha, some bitter roast. Not bad.

Keg at the Rake. it pours very dark brown, with a thin beige head. The nose is dry roast, smoke, chocolate and filter coffee. The taste is roasted malt, caramel, toffee, smoke, aniseed, metal and dark chocolate, with a dry, roasted malt finish. Medium body and moderate carbonation. Smooth and easy drinking.

Appearance - Black / very dark ruby...nitro thick creamy white head.
Aroma - Roasted malts....burnt wood....chocolate.
Taste - Roasted malt...bit earthy hop...hint of orange zest.
Palate - Medium to thin body....over carbonated....finish bit dry, roast malt, hint of zest.
Overall - Not keen on this out of a keg. Might be a bit better cask but I wasnβt all that impressed - bit muddled to me. Iβd prefer a pint of Guinness.

(Keg at White Horse, Parsonβs Green, London, 20 July 2011) Black colour with creamy, beige head. Roasted, malty taste with chocolate, coffee, dark bread and ryvita. Roasted, malty taste with notes of chocolate, dark bread, gentle coffee hints and a mild, roasty bitterness in the finish. Medium body, dry. Nice but lacking something extra (would probably gain from not being served ice cold).

Bottle from Scottisch Real Ale Shop. Dark brown colour, medium tan head. Nose is roasted malts, coffee, bit of laurel. Flavour is roasted malts, bit of coffee, sour fruits. Medium carbonation. Not much going on.

50cl bottle. Dark-brown/black in colour - generally opaque but some glints of light around the edges. It has a thick creamy head! On the nose there is sweet malt and a hint of coffee. The taste has much more coffee and some miilk chocolate. The palate is a little more than medium-bodied, the texture is very creamy and the end is quite elegant - no alcohol burn, just a gentle clean finish. The overall impression is of a very enjoyable beer, rich but restrained.

Bottle from Waitrose. Dark brown in colour with a slight, off-white head. Big roasty malt aroma, with some dark chocolate. Earthy malt aroma, with more chocolate, black coffee and a slight touch of sourness. Finish was pretty bitter. Good.
