Grape ale by Dok referring to an eccentric but long defunct café in Nevele west of Ghent, thanks to Jasper Pollet for sharing at ‘his’ Hal 16! Snow white, moussey, medium thick, opening head, more or less clear yellow-golden robe with large-bubbled sparkling, gradually evolving into a murky beige as the bottle is further emptied. Aroma of strong sweet Riesling and Muscaris grapes, mandarin, gooseberry jam, apple vinegar, Doyenné pear, unripe pineapple, dust, hints of lime zest and carraway seed. Crisp, fruity onset, sour and sweet with lots of fructose sweetness from the grapes used (Riesling and Muscaris both very clear again), gooseberry, lime and mandarin effects, spritzy carbonation, smooth bready core under lots of lingering sweet-sour, juicy grape fruitiness, adding dusty (very old carraway seed powder) and chalky accents in the finish. The alcohol, though warming a bit, remains very much behind the scenes, in itself noteworthy for a beer of this strength. Totally different from the actually sour grape ale Grape Me also by Dok and tasted next to this one, in being more supple, soft and sweet, with some odd side effects – but tasty all the same. More literally a grape ‘ale’ than Grape Me, in any case, which is much closer to a grape lambic.

9/III/24 - 75cl bottle, shared @ DOK Brewing Company (Gent), BB: 15/XI/25 (2024-158)
Little cloudy orange blond beer, small creamy off-white head, unstable. Aroma: lovely, very floral, a bit fruity, some jalapeño, yeasty. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: soft acidity, dry, a bit funky, fruity, gentle bitterness, yeasty character. Aftertaste: a bit soapy, yeasty, floral, a little bitter, some grapes indeed.
