A deliberately ‘lighter’ summer version of what we all know as ‘oude kriek’, this is a typical Boerenerf product in that it achieves this lighter character by being blended with (their) cider – an interesting idea never executed before for all I know. Medium thick, pale lilac-pink, opening but otherwise retaining head on a misty ruby red robe with fuchsia glow – indeed a tad lighter red than usual for a traditional kriek. Aroma of ripe sour cherries but less overwhelmingly so than is custom in the genre (again deliberately so), yellow plum, cherry pits with almond-like effect, red apple peel, raw rhubarb, minerals, grass, was, a faint background hint at swimming pool chlorine (a common element in oude kriek), sheep’s sorrel, lemon. Very fruity, tart onset, obviously laden with sour cherries – but indeed clearly less so than is typical for an oude kriek, in being ‘diluted’ by the cider, adding a pronounced red apple flavour (even unsugared apple sauce) which becomes almost as strong as the cherry flavour. Hints of redcurrant, sorrel and rhubarb at the edges, in a crisply minerally effervescence only adding to the overall ‘summery’ feel; drying yoghurty lactic acidity supports the fruitiness in this case, while in the end faint bitter notes of cherry pits and old hops appear, as well as a light-footed whiff of woodiness. The cherry skin and flesh effects fade as the apple element from the cider remains very strong – as if biting in an apple slice and a sour cherry at the same time. This may not be what the true ‘oude kriek’ lover will expect, but on a warm summer afternoon, this is utterly refreshing, elegant and quenching – kriek from a different point of view indeed. Absolutely worth a try, chilled and served in a wine or flute glass.

750ml (thx, Phill!) @ Sales Force. Appearance: red-ish copper with a rose head. Aroma: loads of fermented cherries, nice funk, lots of manure, cherry pits. Taste: along the same lines, less intense and complex than aroma, tannic, a bit too tart, manure, cherries mostly fermented out. Overall: quite good.

Hazy and reddish. Thin head. Bright cherry, light cider note, with a bit of leathery lambic in there as well. Some pedio. On the palate, it's got quite a bit of cherry up front, the cider lends tannins into the finish, with a bit of barrel in there. Off-dry finish. The cider is noticeable, and I don't mind it but it is a little bit distracting as well.

750mL bottle. Pours murky ruby with pinkish off-white head. Aroma has sweet cherries, musty barnyard funk, cider. Flavour has a lot of musty, sweet cherries with some tannic apple skin tartness. Excellent.

750mL bottle, pours a vibrant cherry red with a small off-pink head. Aroma is full of bright, tart cherry skins upfront, maybe a touch of apple skins, and gentle funk. Flavour is fairly assertive, with bright tart cherries, some gentle apple skins, assertive carb, very gentle apple skins, modest funk, and just a touch of residual sugar. The cider seems to add just a touch of sharpness and adds to the assertive carb. This is really great.

23/VII/24 - 75cl bottle @ Alengrin’s place, BB: 27/III/34, lot: 23/24-19, 2024 edition (2024-577) Thanks to Alengrin for sharing the bottle!
Clear to little cloudy deep ruby red beer, small creamy irregular light pink head, unstable, non adhesive, falls down quickly. Aroma: lots of cider, apples, apple skin, earthy, a bit woody, apple sauce, some cherries, a little oxidized. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: lots of apple juice, a little bitter, a hint of cherries, but only very faint, some almonds. Aftertaste: lots of cider, a little bitter, some almonds, all apple flavour, sweet-sour, pretty dry, quite some tannins, lots of malic acid, so sour I feel like it’s affecting my enamel.

--Sample, thanks fonefan! -- Deep ruby, small head. Juicy aroma of red currant and cherries. Mid sweet with underlting tartness. Medium bodied with rounded mouthfeel. Dominated by red currant and cherries. Some cherry stone bitterness. A modern style lambic where nearly the lambic character drowns in the flavouring, thus rather one dimensional and dull for the style.

Sample (thanks fonefan!). Pinkish red colour with a small off-white head, which disappears quite fast. Aroma is cherries, some slight funk, quite big tartness and also sour wooden elements. Flavour is cherries, some wood, mild sourness with some tart and mildly funky tones. Refreshing, and not all too heavy Lambic. Still very drinkable.
