Maginja - Strawberry Tree - Arbutus unedo
A lambic style beer with wild Maginja berries that thrive in the pristine Mediterranean wilderness. Aiming to restore the popularity of this almost forgotten fruit and it's exquisite taste.
2019/2020 assemblage
Blend of:
55% Belgian sour mix, aged 12 months in the 500l French oak (used beforehand for Pinela wine)
35% Belgian Ale, aged in our red wine barriques that were used after coolship for 6 months. After that it was macerated on welschriesling spent grapes for a year
10% Brett blends, fermented primary with bootleg biology strains
Beer was aged 18 months in wooden barrels, 6 months on Maginja fruit and 6 month in fermentor.
All 50kg of berries were handpicked throughout the Dubrovnik region over a period of two months, frozen, transported to Maribor, and placed in barrel.

Bottle, Pivoljub. Clear red, medium white head, not lasting. Milder nose, very sweet strawberries and equaly mild vinous sour nose. Very puckery sourness at first, nice vinous and fruity with slight tartness in teh finish. Lasting and gentle aftertaste. Light body and very fresh. Superb drinkability. Strong vinous presence and sourness, though not even a little sharp. Exactly what I like.

Bottled 375ml. -at Goblet Zagreb, shared with Marko & hrabren. Unclear orange/amberish coloured, minimal white head, acidic fruity nose. Acidic/tartish and quite dry taste with notes of fruits, white wine and mild touch of spices in the finish.

Bottle at Goblet ZG. Hazy reddish, pinkish body, traces of a white head. Lean, lightly fruity aroma, smooth, lactic notes, saliva, funk, but well-rounded. Lean, dry taste, the subtle fruitiness not reminding me initially of maginja/planika (strawberry tree fruit) itself, though it's not as if that has a hugely distinct taste. Wild notes, well integrated light funk, lactic touches, weak weak matches. Very well balanced, extremely drinkable, even if it seemed mildly astringent at first. And as someone who grew up with a strawberry tree just by his grandparent's place on Brač, I'm absolutely adoring the fact that this exist and that it was finally released, so +0.1 for that... I'm biased dammit. :D
