Gravenstein is a variety that was bred in Denmark in the 18th century. The apples are large, tasty and juicy. Nowadays, red Gravenstein is the most common, but older growers insist that the yellow variety is the best. We use both in our Gravenstein cider.

March 2022: 750 ml corked & caged bottle, vintage 2021, parti #1, bottle #307, from Vinmonopolet Madla. ABV is 7%. Clear and very pale straw colour, pours sparkling with a shortlived white head. Nice aroma of Gravenstein apples, a hint of what I take to be sulphites, even though the cider allegedly is free of sulphites. Flavour of sweet and slightly acidic Norwegian apples

Bottle. Practically clear golden body with champagne type carbonation under a small, short living white head. Aroma is quite clean apple, both ripe and fresh. Hint of acidity and a very low level of sulphur. Taste is smooth, refreshing and easy drinkable with the same combination of ripe and green apple, medium sweet, mild acidity and practically no sulphur. Medium body and average lasting aftertaste. Nice and easy drinkable cider.

Bottle, 75cl corked. It pours a sparkling dark straw body with some bubbles on top. The aroma is predominantly ripe apples, but there's also grass, alcohol, cellar and a touch of fresh yellow apples. It's quite effervescent on the palate, not too much though, with a light warmth. Dry, yet with a sweet apple juice feeling, and with a good body. The flavor too has lots of ripe apple, but there's more of the fresh apples here. Grass, cellar and a little alcohol chimes in. Lasting finish. This one felt a bit dull at first, but it opens up and turns out really well. 201101
