It's no secret that at Brasserie de la Senne we love our light beers. Taras Boulba, with its 4.5%, was among the pioneers in this regard in Belgium. We've decided to take things a bit further by offering two even lighter beers, which will both be released within a month - just in time for the beautiful days we're all looking forward to!
Personally, we're not big fans of completely alcohol-free beers. This has many reasons, but among others because they can't be made with fully artisanal methods. On the other hand, we love ultra-light beers, who are fully fermented and brewed according to our artisanal production methods. This is one of the biggest challenges for a brewer: it's about giving texture and taste to a beer that, because of its lightness, contains even more water than a so-called "normal" beer! A real challenge, and that's what makes it exciting.
We're starting this month with the release of the DRUID LAGER, brewed collaboratively with our friends at Pen Druid (Virginia, USA). It's a blonde lager with only 2.6% alcohol, but full of flavor! It contains a good proportion of wheat, which gives it an appealing haze and body. Its aroma is both floral (white flowers, elderflowers) and slightly fruity. It has a very light sulfurous touch typical of lager fermentation, but that's what gives it character. On the palate, the wheaty aspect blends with very fresh fruity, floral, and herbaceous notes, all supported by a light bitterness.

Bottle at home, from an online peddler whom I can't recall, 22/04/2025.
Pale golden blonde, carbonation evident, topped with a lasting white head ... a handsome look to this one.
Nose is pale malts, cereals, corn husk, toasted grains, herb.
Taste comprises mellow citric peel - way more than the nose ever suggested, pale malts, light bread dough, herb, grains, lighter cereal notes.
Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close.
Solid flavoursome thirst quenching lager.

Bottle at home in Hackney - picked up from HOTM. Pours clear yellow-gold with a frothy, pure white head. Light sweet flavour with gorgeous, clean grassy bitterness, dried pale malts, hay, lemon rind. Light bodied with massaging carbonation. Clean and drying to finish, balanced. Exceptional - especially so when considering the strength.

Shelter: gold with white head. Aroma is peppery, grassy and citrus. Taste is spicy and a bit punchy. Loads of flavor for the small size. Also at that point of the night I did not need more booze.

Bottle. Raynville. Didn’t realise it’s a low alcohol job. Didn’t matter. Great beer. Hazed straw colour with a good white messy foam. Clean dry malt. Light underripe citrus. Taste is clean dry and pithy lemon bitter. Light and fresh throughout with lively fine carbonation. Crisp as you like bitterness to finish.

Bottle from HoTM. It pours lightly hazy pale lemon yellow with a thick, fluffy white head. The aroma is fresh and clean, twist of lemon, floral, honeysuckle, crackery malts, grass and straw. The taste is crispy, dry, snappy, punchy & lingering bitterness, pithy citrus, fragrant, floral, peppery spice, herbal accents and crackery malt with a drying and bitter herbal finish. Light body and moderate, fluffy carbonation. Punchy for the abv quenching.
