Kölsch-style Ale

Based on the traditional style of Kölsch beer brewed in Cologne, Germany.

Flavor

Alaskan Kölsch Ale balances a softly malted palate with the clean freshness of hops. In the tradition of the style, neither overpowers the other. Both hops and malt come together to refresh and renew the palate. The straw-gold color and easy drinkability are an enjoyable way to celebrate summer.

Ingredients

Alaskan Kölsch Ale is made from glacier-fed water and a generous blend of European and Pacific Northwest hop varieties and premium two-row and specialty malts. Our water originates in the 1,500 square-mile Juneau Ice Field and from the more than 90 inches of rainfall Juneau receives each year.

Bottle/Fest. A- Grains. A- Orange color, clear liquid, white head. T- Grains. P- Light body, average texture, average carbonation, bland finish. O- Lots of grains. Pretty bland. Felt a bit more like a pale lager than then crispness needed for a nice kolsch.

Pour is a golden with some chill haze and a small white head. Aroma is cereal grain with not much else. Flavor is more cereal grain with a little syrupy sweetness on the end. Kind of got better as it warmed but it was still a bit too sweet and heavy for a kolsch.

12 ounce bottle, 9/10/16. Slightly hazy amber, large fizzy tan head, fair head retention. Aroma of toasted doughy malt and mild floral hops. The taste is bready malts, floral and herbal hops and some faint apricot-like fruits. Medium bodied, crisp, mild lingering bitterness. Solid.

355ml bottle. Pours a clear yellow with a small, short lived, white head that leaves spotty lacing. Sweet, fruity aroma with bready malt and grain. Sweet flavour of bready malt, grain and fruit with a mildly bitter, hoppy finish. Light body with a watery texture and soft carbonation. Boring... but so is the style.

Aroma is a nice fresh beer at first, but then with a second whiff - medicinal. Flavor has some crispness from carbonation, but also some heavy malt sweetness that’s a bit out of place. Color is darker than traditional Kolsch. Ok beer.

I’ll be the first to rate this at a non airport venue, which funny, I have to go there tonight. Draft pour pint at the Safe. Pours an amber color with a thin patchy head. Rich malt flavor with a sweet finish. Not typical for the style for sure. Overall not bad.

On tap on the ferry to Bremington. Pours a clear gold with a white head that dissipates slowly to the edges and laces slightly. Aroma has notes of biscuit and bread with a bit of straw underlying. Flavor is mainly straw and grain with a slight crispness.
