Extra Special Bitter is an English style, which first became popular in London. We are faithful in our use of exclusively whole English hops – Challenger and Wye Target, exactly as it should be. The result is a full warm and rich ale, with a distinct character from the yeast and an earthy orange peel note from the late hops.

[50cl bottle from Westholme Stores, Goring.] A bright copper coloured pour with a thin white head; aroma of caramel with a hint of orange; rather thin with a stewed malt taste; and a toffee finish with some warmth in the stomach. Not a great ESB.

Bottle shared with Ashton McCobb. Pours clear copper with a short-lived thin white head. Aromas of red fruit, light nuts and citrus. Taste is more of the same. Decent example of the style.

Pours dark copper/light red, with about one finger of head. Nicely persistent, some lacing. Aroma is nutty, stone fruits and a slight herbal/floral feel. Taste is nutty and slightly biscuity malts, stone fruits and a delicate herbal bitterness. Medium to high sweet and medium bitter with a balanced finish. A rather simple but well balanced bitter. Light to medium bodied with delicate but persistent carbonation, overall nicely smooth. A well made esb.

Pours a coppery amber from a tap with a thick off white head. Super wheat biscuit aroma falls through in the mouth, thin and bland tasting. Meh.

Bottle, bb 6/18. Amber with a half inch cream head that lasts well. Restrained spiced caramel aroma. Some pears or other vague fruit. Light bodied. Sweet and rather vacant in the middle with caramel and vague fruit before pleasant enough herbal bitterness.
