A California-style IPA with a Belgian twist

Stone Cali-Belgique IPA features a complex and surprising combination of flavors, but behind the fancy title is the simply delicious Stone IPA. The addition of a carefully selected strain of Belgian yeast adds banana and spice notes to the hoppy brightness of our flagship IPA. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.

This beer was created in 2008 when we used Stone IPA as the propagation wort for fermenting our Stone 08.08.08 Vertical Epic Ale. We liked what the Belgian yeast flavors added to Stone IPA, so we kept brewing it and eventually released it as one of our year-round beers.

Draught@Mikkeller & Friends, Copenhagen. Finally got around to taste this. It’s been available at many fests, but I’ve never gotten around to taste it. Golden colour, mediumsized white head. Aroma is fruity, floral, some mild spices and wooden notes. Flavour is fruity, floral, earthy, mild spicy notes as well as some sweet maltiness.

22 fl oz bottle. Dark golden in the glass, nearly two finger white head. Really belgian on the nose, no typical IPA smell. Taste has a lot more hopy bitterness, little bit floral, then increasing belgian yeast with malt in the background. Foral hops in the aftertaste. Hints of citrus. Nice one.

Draught at CBF Wien.
Dark golden, clear body, with a big, stable, creamy, lacing, slightly yellow head.
Aroma of citrus, orange, grass, grapefruit, subtle tropical fruits, candy.
Tastes of grapefruit, lemon zest, resin, grass, some passion fruit, candy.
Medium, a bit creamy mouthfeel, with an average carbonation.
Finishes bitter, medium dry, zesty, herbal, grassy, a bit sweet.

Nice one, although not so special. A bit heavy, on the one hand quite harshly bitter, on the other hand with a quite heavy sweet malt backbone. Not on par with the other IPAs from Stone I’ve had, while still enjoyable.

Tap at Craft Bier Fest Wien. Mostly centered on noble Saazer hops. However seems oxidized to me. Otherwise it is pretty clean and simple, with nothing really poking out. 3.3 Rerate can at a tasting. Really easy drinking. Lots of spicy yeasty complexity complementing the rather traditional English IPA. Flowery grassy hops character. High bitterness, well attenuated. High carbonation, medium-low body. Very good.

Shared 12 oz. bottle. Pours a clear golden color with a foamy white head. Aroma is citrus, yeast, and spice. Taste is bread, citrus, malt, Belgian yeast and spice. The Belgian yeast mutes the IPA characteristics a bit. Interesting.
