A California-style IPA with a Belgian twist

Stone Cali-Belgique IPA features a complex and surprising combination of flavors, but behind the fancy title is the simply delicious Stone IPA. The addition of a carefully selected strain of Belgian yeast adds banana and spice notes to the hoppy brightness of our flagship IPA. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.

This beer was created in 2008 when we used Stone IPA as the propagation wort for fermenting our Stone 08.08.08 Vertical Epic Ale. We liked what the Belgian yeast flavors added to Stone IPA, so we kept brewing it and eventually released it as one of our year-round beers.

Can @ Boxbeers. Pours hazy pale golden with a white head. Esters, yeast and citrussy hops. Its very clean and the hops and yeast are blending together fine. Dry bitter finish. Enjoyable.

Pale blond and clear. Aroma and flavour have elements of orange, yeast and light funkiness too. Although a bitter IPA there are some sweeter notes to this one too.

33cl can from Erzbierschof Zurich. Lots of Belgian-style indeed. Typical yeast and candy aroma over west coast aroma hops. Very bitter taste with a crisp carbonation. Medium long and mostly bitter finish. Works well.

On tap at Erzbierschof. Aroma is bubblegum hop notes and the pour is a gold orange colour. Flavour starts off all belgian, with bread, orange and spices, before a good bitter finish. I really like this.

can bottled only 3 1/2 weeks ago, Berlin version, bright golden with a minimal white head. Aroma of yeast, citrus, pale malts, some orange, some citrus, however all of this in a limited amount. Taste of medium sweetness, quite dry mouthfeel, pretty bitter, dough, some straw, hay, lots of grassy notes, some exotic fruits, some herbs, medium body, normal co2, aftertaste is quite hoppy and bitter.i’m not that impressed.

Can at home. Clear golden with white head. Sweet malts, citrus fruitiness (oranges) and strong doughy yeast presence, mild spices (coriander and cloves). Medium sweet, strong bitter. Medium body, average carbonation. A bit too much Belgique and too little Cali for my liking but it feels good and is a nice beer nonetheless. --- Beer merged from original tick of Cali-Belgique IPA (Cali-België) on 18 Dec 2017 at 15:05 - Score: 7. Can from J P Alsem. Clear orange pour with a decent white head. Notes of rye bread, banana, coriander, honey, funky brett, barnyard. Medium body, medium carbonation and a bitter-sweet and salty finish. --- Beer merged from original tick of Cali-Belgique IPA (Cali-België) on 16 Sep 2016 at 19:35 - Score: 7

355ml bottle. Clear golden colour with a long lasting frothy one-finger white head, nice lacing. Aroma of sweet malts, citrus, grapefruit, yeast, spices and herbs. The taste is quite Belgian-like, the spicy yeasty malty flavours are stronger than the hop character in the beer, which is slightly herbal and slightly fruity/citrus. I think it works nicely together though, it’s a well executed blend, closer in style to Belgian I’d say.
