A California-style IPA with a Belgian twist
Stone Cali-Belgique IPA features a complex and surprising combination of flavors, but behind the fancy title is the simply delicious Stone IPA. The addition of a carefully selected strain of Belgian yeast adds banana and spice notes to the hoppy brightness of our flagship IPA. Think of it as an otherwise identical twin to Stone IPA that was raised in a Belgian culture. Literally.
This beer was created in 2008 when we used Stone IPA as the propagation wort for fermenting our Stone 08.08.08 Vertical Epic Ale. We liked what the Belgian yeast flavors added to Stone IPA, so we kept brewing it and eventually released it as one of our year-round beers.

Bottle pour into nonic glass from Cigarette City, Seabrook NH. Aroma is Belgian yeast with fruity esters with that hint of bubblegum (the stiff, stale kind in trading card packages) they mention on the bottle. Appearance is clear golden yellow with trace sparkle, minimal head with poor retention and no lasting lacing. Taste is a little bit sweet fruity/bubblegum but it is drowned out by the tart/yeast. Palate is light bodied with thin texture, average carbonation and crisp, dry mix of tart/bitter finish. Overall, this sounded better than it was. I don’t agree that this was recognizable as an IPA--had it been it truly would have been fantastic, but it went too far over to the yeasty side.

Fra keg på Stormbird 29 Nov 15. Delt med Rune. Lett mørk gyldenbrun. Uklar. Filmskum. Litt lacing. Forsiktig ferskenaroma. Smaken aprikos. Lett syrlig etter hvert. Rabarbra. Ikke helt bra.

Keg at Big Country, Stockholm. Hazy pale amber, rich head. Fruity marzipan aroma with elderflowers and citrus. Mid dry with medium body and rounded mouthfeel. Grainy and marzipany with buckwheat and resin. Really bitter finish.

Pours a clear golden colour with a big off-white head that stays a while and creates foamy lacing. Citrus aromas with hints of Belgian Ale yeast, other fruitiness. Grainy malts taste start with a big bitter middle and lingering into the finish. Smooth oily mouthfeel. Lots of grassy notes, but not enough Belgian ones.

Pours an amber from a bottle. Weird but okay amalgamation of hoppy west coast IPA made with Belgian fuzzy yeast. Big heavy bitter hops throughout, with a quick thinning out and a lingering general bitterness. Good beer.

Tap @ Beer Temple, 5oz sample. Clear golden color. White sticky head, leaving nice lace-rings. Aroma’s: caramel malts, some (sweet/sour) fruits. Retronasal it’s caramel, a bto sweet, yeast, fruity. Flavor is moderate bitter with light caramel sweetness and light fruit. Medium bodied. Long finish, firm bitter, light grain, earthy. Nice.

Sample at SBWF 2015. A bit hazy medium amber with a white head. Aroma and taste of fruit, yeast, grapefruit, hops and some light grass. Balanced and with a medium body. The finish was nicely bitter. A pleasant one.
