Juniper berry-flavoured ale brewed at De Graal for Bierzonder, a beer company in Limburg which does not only commercialize two beers (this one and a tripel) but also organises tastings and acts as a beer consultant for catering businesses. Tasted under the original name of ‘Local Taste’, but apparently this has meanwhile changed to ‘Horendol’ for marketing reasons. Shared with tderoeck. Thick and frothy, membrane-lacing, greyish off-white head on an initially clear copper brown robe with deep mahogany glow, misty with sediment. Aroma of dried prunes, brown bread crust, dry caramel, wet brown cardboard, rosehip, ‘graanjenever’, wet toast, tree leaves, blackberries, dried fig and a hint of natural rubber – the juniper berries piercing through herbally here and there but luckily not overpowering (I am not a great juniper berry lover). Fruity onset, dried prunes and figs, hint of cured meat somewhere, fizzy carb; slightly sweet, rounded brown-bready malt body with vague sourish edge, dry-caramelly and a bit toasted-bitterish, the bitterness gently accentuated by the juniper berries which add a herbal aroma (also reminiscent of rosehip and even bayleaf), followed by an earthy hop touch and warming, ‘jenever’-like alcohol, with the juniper effect lingering resinously for a bit. Frankly better than I was expecting, a decent Belgian ale for an autumn evening I guess (even though I tasted it in mid-summer).
