Cone is our 2023 festive IPA. Brewed with lots of resinous, piney hops, including Chinook and Summit, and a light amber colour. Of course, the haze too!

440ml can from St Mars of the Desert in Attercliffe - hazy gold body, big head. Solid resinous pine and spruce hit up front, long sharp hoppy bitterness at the back, picking up lots of fruity notes on the back of the tongue. Excellent stuff.

440ml can. Hazy orange brown, big off-white head, some sediment, bit worrying! Aroma of piney hops, orange, mandarin. Taste is piney, resinous, lots of orange, tinned mandarin, hint of caramel, long bitter finish. Medium bodied.

On tap at Ebenezers, Nantwich. Pours a cloudy dark apricot with minimal almost white head and good lacing. The aroma is mainly Belgian style yeast and hops with some malty hints. In the mouth the yeast is the first thing to hit the taste buds. Overall it is quite sweet and juicy with flavours of stone fruits, oranges and spices with traces of nuts and herbs. This is rather nice – I would call it a Belgian IPA though.

Can at home, from HOTM online, 03/12/23. Moderately hazed orange amber with a good sized lasting just off white head. Nose is orange cream, melon, mandarin, hint of vanilla, pine needle, papaya. Taste comprises bitter orange, toasted malts, hint of caramel, pine needle, subtle herb, grapefruit, bitter sweet tropical fruits. Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close spliced with juicy cone lightly resinous hop bitterness. Solid easy drinking IPA.

2024 version (6.2% ABV). Can from Against The Grain. Hazy amber body with an off-white head. Low carbonation. Good lacing. Aroma of vine tomatoes, strawberry laces and orange. Flavour of sponge cake, marmalade, dried apricot and white sugar. Medium body with a smooth texture. Soft fizz. Like with last year’s version, I find it quite sweet and cakey. It’s fine but I prefer a more bitter IPA. 3.7 (5-7-7-4-14) 2023 version (6.0% ABV). Can from Against The Grain. Hazy amber body with a thick off-white head. No visible carbonation. Faint lacing. Aroma of peach, vanilla, pine and nectarine. Flavour of Jaffa cake, pine and dried apricot. Medium body with a smooth texture. Soft fizz. It’s quite sweet and cake-like. An unusual, tasty IPA. 3.7 (4-7-7-4-15)

Silver bullet courtesy of Dann. Not a looker this especially. Sits murked up deep amber with a solid soppy off white froth. The head makes up for the liquid. Anyhoo. Big sappy resinous notes. Chewy malts. Some flora and oily herb. Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale territory. Taste is chewy bitter with spicy biscuit malt sweetness. Loads of body here. Smooth and oily with rolling carbonation. Progressive bitterness throughout. Top notch tasty IPA.
