20/IX/24 - on tap @ Borefts Day 1, Brouwerij De Molen (Bodegraven), BB: n/a (2024-971) Thanks to the Brewver crew for sharing today’s beers!

Clear dark brown to black beer, no head. Aroma: quite some coconut all right, malty, soft roast, earthy, cocoa powder. MF: ok carbon, medium body. Taste: very earthy up front, a bit sourish, bitter touch, more roasted flavours. Aftertaste: earthy, coffee, bitter, too bitter, not enough coconut and too much coffee to my liking.

Trockener, etwas brettiger Beginn. Moderate Süße, dumpf nach Kaffee, Kokosnuss kann ich kaum erkennen. Trocken, mittellanger Abgang, ok. 10/11/10/9//10

Flavoured strong (though not truly 'imperial') stout by The Garden, in collaboration with BBOP, a nomadic brewery from Budapest, Hungary apparently. From tap (pint) at BrewDog Brussels - very expensive at that. Thin and open, beige, dissolving head on a black beer with mahogany edges. Aroma of melting black chocolate, 'Koetjesreep', rainwater or even mud, very subtle coconut, diluted coffee grounds, moldy walnuts, bayleaf, black tea, milk powder, salmiak, touch beef stock. Sweet onset but nowhere cloying, some fig jam and green pear, with light sourish (blackberry) accent running underneath; very light beef stock-like umami accent too. Softish fizz, oily and slick mouthfeel; bitter-chocolatey, dry-caramelly, vaguely nutty core with some salmiak and bayleaf returning, but hardly any 'real' coconut (not even toasted); rather 'diluted' coffee grounds effect in the finish along with a leafy hop bitter note, superseded by ongoing dark-caramelly malts. The alcohol remains well hidden - and frankly I do not expect it to show up at this ABV at all. Hints of shoe polish and rainwater faraway in the background, but again: no actively discernible coconut in spite of its premise. Neither a true coconut stout nor 'imperial' in the present-day sense of the word, but a simple, smooth, easily drinkable strongish stout. Decent as such, but points off for not at all delivering what it promises - and definitely not worth the price those BrewDog thieves charge for it in Brussels.

The Garden / B*BOP Fermentory Imperial Coffee & Coconut Stout Style: Imperial Pastry Stout ABV: 7.1% Can, 0.44l Black pour, two finger frothy beige head, medium retention, minimal lacing on the glass. Nice on the nose, coffee and coconut, light dark fruits and berries in the background. Medium body, medium carbonation, lively. Average mouthfeel and texture, somewhat light for an IS, slightly sticky, easily drinkable. Balanced roasty bittersweet taste with some mild tart notes in the background. Aroma of dark malt, caramel, coffee. Cocoa, milk chocolate, coconut, berries. Bready notes in the background, wafers, slight sugary stickiness. Medium lasting finish, sticky, slightly dry, lingering roasty bitterness. Good but slightly too light, would be better with slightly fuller body.

On tap at the brewery taproom. Dark brown to black, medium beige head, diminishing quickly, creamy, no retention. Intense milk chocolate, toasted bread, toasted coconut, cocoa and butter. Hints of dark fruit underneath. Smooth, sweet, roasty and burnt notes, burnt toast. Not too sweet, actually good balance. Vanilla and coconut cream. Tart, slightly astringent. Not rough. Minimal bitterness, dry finish.
