What’s on the other side, when we die? It’s a debate that can cause heated discussions, fueled by people who claim to have been to that other side – and come back. However, tobacconist Guifré Galbó from Girona in Catalonia gained worldwide fame in occult circles a few years back when he took things quite a few steps further. Guifré claimed to have been to hell, from which he returned. According to him, the story goes that Girona was hit by a tremor, while Guifré was at work in his tobacco store. A huge box of Cuban cigars had apparently fallen from a high shelf and made an impact on the unfortunate tobacconist’s skull. Gaining consciousness Guifré found himself engulfed in the most horrible sea of flames, and he had no doubt that he had ended up in the fires of hell. Being a devout Catholic with only a few missteps in his life – Mercé was her name – he felt that he had been treated very unfairly. And according to the story he since told, he demanded to see the person in charge, explained the profound unreasonableness of the situation and suddenly returned to consciousness, lying on the floor of his tobacco store surrounded by paramedics. Today Guifré Galbó runs his own congregation, named ‘Hellfire & Damnation’ because that’s exactly what he preaches. And he claims to know what he’s talking about – being the only person who has gone to hell and come back.

0.44l can. Aroma of roasted malt, coffee, pine and citrus. Pours almost black color with thick creamy light brown head, good lacing and average sparkling appearance. Taste starts mild to medium sweet but rich roasted malt, nuts and coffee, following is herbal, medicinal and piney, mouthfeel is rather dry, while finish is heavy bitter. Full body, thick texture and average carbonation in palate. Hops over hell…

44 cl can picked up at the brewery's webshop poured into a tulip glass. Pitch black with a dense, tanned head. Roasted-fruity aroma with citrus, pines, toasted bread, herbal hoppy notes and chocolate. The taste is bitter. Full body, oily texture. Dry and bitter roasted finish. Lovely stuff.

Thick cream-tan head over dark brown, orange-rimmed beer. Slightly sweet nose for a black IPA; straw, roast, charcoal, melanoidins combined with hopoils. Dry, again that charcoal streak, but still restsugars underneath. Black chocolate, cigarette ash. Finish is dry-herbal-hoppy. Feels rather well bodied. Medium to good carbonation. Slick, oily. A bit sweeter than black IPA's tend to be. Still, very far from bad.

Sample (thanks fonefan!). Black colour, small brown head. Aroma is floral, fruity, toasted, roasted and some mild spicy tones. Flavour is floral, roasted some fruity and mild ashy tones to it. Actually on the verge of being too much, but still stays on the drinkable side.

100ml draught, from a sample tray at Jabeerwocky. Almost black in the glass, fair lacing from a covering beige head. Inviting on the nose with roasted malts and leafy hops. Well balanced taste profile with resinous hops and craft malts, hints of liquorice. Smoothly roasted ending, bittersweet. Fine bodied. Good drinking. (Warszawa, 17.10.2024).
