Ommegang Biere de Mars is a Belgian-style dry hopped amber ale with a bit of magical space dust woven in Brettanomyces bruxellensis, a wild-yeast used in the secondary fermentation. The Brett imparts added tartness, a bit of zing and some farmhouse funkiness.

Biere de Mars reveals a copper-amber body and a frothy white head that builds, clings and stays. Aromas are of malt and grain, clove, fruit and a bit of funk. Flavors are full-bodied with delicate malty sweetness, followed by spicy, peppery yeastiness and Brett-induced funk. Hopping is subtly bitter and aromatic, bumped up a bit by dry hopping. The finish is dry and gently lingering.

Bottled. A hazy amber beer with a thin off-white head. The aroma is sweet with notes of malt and fruit, and so is the flavor, leading to a dry and bitter finish.

750ml bottle-pours a foamy off white head that disappeared and gold/amber color. Aroma is a funky yeast, white grapes, grainy/bread, some spice/vinuous. Taste is very funky yeast, dry, dry, white grapes/vinuous, lemon-sour/tart. Cold is better, but not my taste. Thanks to Joe-jwc215 for sharing this.

Bottle courtesy of Cletus Batch #1 tasted in April 2009: Poured a clear medium amber color ale with a quite big bubbly head with minimal retention and some light lacing. Aroma of zesty Brett notes with some great Belgian style malt. Taste is quite a complex mix with some dry Bretty notes, some zesty refreshing notes with a lightly sweet bold Belgian malt backbone. Body is about average with some good carbonation. Very well done and something I wish I could have more often.

Batch #2, Brewed October 2008. Pours with a generous (three finger), creamy, off-white head. Solid head retention throughout; this thing sticks. Thick bubbles. Effervescent, hazed sunrise orange body below. Thick, foamy sheets of lace. Aroma has a bit of funk and earthiness from the brett, a touch of citrus (lemon peel), toast, caramel, florals, and a some hops. Could use a bit of time, aroma seems a bit under developed (biere de garde = beer to keep). Taste is citrusy with brett earthiness, and leather, a bit of citrus peel, toasted bread, caramel, light spices, horse blanket and CO2. Pleasant. A bit metallic in the finish, as well as a bit bitter. A lot of earthy character. Soft, creamy and effervescent mouthfeel, light on the palate, with lively bubbles on the tongue. Refreshing, and should age with good complexity.

April 2008 bottle from Secret Santa. Has 10 months on it at time of sampling and the brett is coming through. Aroma has notes of leather and musty barn loft. Still quite a bit of residual sweetness in this, so I could see another year bringing out some more funk. Malt sweetness is finely caramelized, with a a spicy finishing hop rounding out the finish.
