Ommegang Biere de Mars is a Belgian-style dry hopped amber ale with a bit of magical space dust woven in Brettanomyces bruxellensis, a wild-yeast used in the secondary fermentation. The Brett imparts added tartness, a bit of zing and some farmhouse funkiness.

Biere de Mars reveals a copper-amber body and a frothy white head that builds, clings and stays. Aromas are of malt and grain, clove, fruit and a bit of funk. Flavors are full-bodied with delicate malty sweetness, followed by spicy, peppery yeastiness and Brett-induced funk. Hopping is subtly bitter and aromatic, bumped up a bit by dry hopping. The finish is dry and gently lingering.

Draught from waterfront manhattan around Spring 2010. Nice yeast and aroma without being overpowering or too heavy. Great beer to enjoy multiple glasses of even though the alc is too high for session.

From Sept 2008

I got this bottle in a trade with nutbrown. Thanks Alan!

The 750ml bottle says Batch #1 April 2008.

It pours a slightly hazy orange gold with a +2 finger head of billowy foam. Lots of lacing and the head retention is excellent. Magnificent looking brew!

The smell has loads of funk from the Brett but I can also smell a lot of fruitiness, some yeast, and some spices. Inviting nose.

The taste starts off with some tart fruit that borders on sour but isn't quite there. I get some spices like coriander and some light pepper notes and an earthy than funky taste that is knocking my socks off. Umm....no connection between the Bretty goodness and my socks intended. Right near the finish, I get some notes of lemon citrus, twang if you will, and it's a perfect sendoff for this very tasty and very drinkable BdG.

The body is on the thin side while the carbonation is medium; that works for me for the style that it is. Yum. I haven't had a BdG in ages and Ommegang did a great job here!

Bottom line: I *love* this brew and I want to say thanks again to Alan. This bottle put a *huge* smile on my face.

750 ml bottle into signature tulip glass; Batch 2, 10/2008 bottling. Pours lightly hazy/cloudy orange amber color with a 2 finger fairly dense off white head with good retention, that reduces to a nice cap that lingers. Spotty foamy lacing clings on the glass, with a good amount of streaming carbonation retaining the head. Aromas of lemon zest, orange peel, apricot, pear, apple, white grape, herbal, floral, hay, straw, grass, pepper, musty funk, light leather, bread, light caramel, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Very nice aromas with good balance and complexity of fruity/earthy/funky yeast, earthy hops, and pale malt notes; with good strength. Taste of lemon zest, apricot, pear, apple, white grape, pepper, hay, straw, grass, herbal, floral, light leather, bread, light caramel, light funk, and herbal/yeast earthiness. Good amount of earthy yeast spiciness on the finish; with lingering notes of lemon zest, apricot, pear, apple, white grape, pepper, hay, straw, grass, herbal, floral, light funk, bread, light caramel, and herbal/yeast earthiness on the finish for a good bit. Very nice balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, earthy hop, and pale malt flavors; with a great malt/yeast flavor balance and zero cloying flavors after the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium bodied; with a very smooth, crisp, and lightly prickly mouthfeel that is nice. Alcohol is well hidden with only a light warming present after the finish. Overall this is a damn nice biere de garde style. All around good balance and complexity of fruity/spicy yeast, earthy hop, and pale malt flavors; and bery smooth and crisp to sip on. A very enjoyable offering.

2008 Vintage. This was out of a 750 ml bottle and shared among the table @ Novare Res Bier café before the Zwanze release. Hazy amber color with little soapy head. Aromas of pear, grass, funky brett, herbal tea ending with a touch of acidity. Taste is complex and interesting. Musty wet hay. Tart fruit flavor balanced with a smooth brett funk. Chewy bread malt is still showing here and gives it some sweetness. The herbal tea like notes show up just before you finish the sip. The brett has for sure been toned down after the years of sitting. Medium in body and the texture was amazing to me. I hate to use the “like velvet” expression but… it was super smooth. I’m glad I got too try this. I would be open to trading for a chance to drink this again.

750ml bottle - Pours up a huge, hazy, fizzy head. It has a fruity aroma with berries, citrus, and brett funk. It tastes sweet, tart, and funky with a bubbly palate, a medium body, and a funky finish. Very good.

750mL bottle, split with manuchampions, Matts_Property and uhlan, pours a cloudy reddish orange with a small beige head. Aroma of dry orange peel, tropical fruits, yeast, citrus, leather and horse blanket. Flavour of dry white wine / champagne, dry citrus / orange peel, some subtle spices and light tropical fruits. Extremely well-balanced and flavourful. Excellent.
