Bottle from Belgian Beer Shop, Leuven. Blond colour, white foam. Nose of banana, light citrussy. Malty, bitter finish. Ok.

Commissioned by BVBA Vemaco, bottle from Wijnegemse Drankenhal. Lightly lacing, off-white, irregular, rather unstable and eventually completely vanishing head over a clear golden beer with lively fizz, misty and more ochre in colour with deposit. Light gusher too, losing nearly all of its carbonation to the surrounding air after a while. Aroma of sourdough, old cookies, straw, gooseberries, dried thyme, bubblegum, baked banana, chicken soup, cooked beans, dry and mouldy coriander seed, green curry, dried chamomille, wet cardboard, glue- and even band aid-like chemicals and a hint of burnt hay, even some faint melting rubber (DTMS); in all, the nose is not really intolerable per se, but absolutely not inviting either. Fruity onset, unripe peach and dito pineapple, gooseberries, quite spritzy carbonation, bit minerally; lean, light and supple body consisting of lightly bready but otherwise boring pale malt sweetishness, grainy and straightforward with some spicy Belgian yeastiness on top of it. Finish has a moderate amount of earthy, leafy hops with subtle bittering properties, oily and resiny coriander effect with a glueish quality to it; it is, however, primarily the simple malt sweetness which persists directly into the throat, along with an almost cooked vegetable-like quality. The burnt sulphur smell of DMTS is the main issue here, in technical terms; conceptually, this is again a boring Belgian blonde with too much coriander. It seems every opportunity, in this case an old castle, is abused in Belgium to commission some boring beer... This one does feel more ’natural’ than what I am used to from Haacht, but it remains completely redundant, just another tick but nothing worth remembering. Lacks body, lacks hops and lacks inspiration. If they wanted to have a ’medieval’ beer, why not make a sour ale or even - why not - some ’koyt’-like spice beer instead of adding another cliché to the already overcrowded coriander soup market?

Clear deep blond beer, big creamy off-white head, little stable, bit adhesive. Aroma: sweet, some banana, very malty, grains, hay, little spicy. MF: soft carbon, medium body. Taste: very yeasty, bread, some banana, citric touch, grassy bitterness, sweet touch. Aftertaste: spicy, some coriander, dry, soft bitterness, bit sugary, banana again.

Hazy blond body with a white frothy head. Aroma of orange and hops - bit weak. Moderately bitter, lightly sweet flavour. Ok balance. Not very good overall. Quite weak.

Good, just off-white head over pale golden beer. Very farmyard odours, spicy, coleslaw, sulphury. Sulphury in the taste again, spicy (coriander and rootspices). Light to medium bodied, quite slick. Not bad - a bit weird seen where it hails from. Mediaeval touch?
