Special edition of the classic Cristal Alken to celebrate its 80th birthday in 2008 and allegedly brewed "after the style and original taste of the early 20th century". In those days, Belgian pale lagers were made with higher gravity and more alcohol and were called ’bock’, though they had little to do with the German Bock beer tradition. Quite thick, cream white, stable head, colour a pale yellowish blonde, cristal clear with fierce sparkling. Sweet pale malts in the nose, freshly cut grass, young cheese, earthy potato juice, unripe pear. Taste begins neutral but rapidly becomes malty, even a bit sharp and dry, only vaguely sweetish, smooth and supple with medium carbonation with a slight tart effect, finishing in a mild but explicit hop bitterness, dry and reminiscent of a German Pilsener. For such a big brewing company, they succeeded in making a truly interesting pils, at least to Belgian standards - which in itself does not mean that much anyway, I suppose.

Bottle. Pale yellow colour, white foam. Medium carbonation. Light body, watery pilsener with light malty notes and light bitter finish. Easy drinkable, no character.

30/VI/2012 - 33cl bottle @ Brambo's place - BB: not indicated on the bottle (2012-674)

Clear golden beer, creamy white head, unstable, bit adhesive. Aroma: grains, grassy hops, cow fodder, barnyard. MF: ok carbon, light to medium body. Taste: pretty bitter hops, grassy, grains. Aftertaste: malts, bitter hops. Actually one of the better Belgian pilseners I've had.

A very well refined and easy to drink pilsener. Good balance of bitterness and sweetness.

Bottle: Golden, small stable and lacy white foamy layer, perfumed sweetish-grainy nose with a delicate bitterness underneath; mild sweetish-bitter flavour, light to medium bodied, relatively soft; slightly drier bitter-sweet finish accompanied by a tinge of turpentine. Quite good....for a BELGIAN Pilsener.

Bottle @ home, 1500th rating. Completely standard pilsener. Nothing wrong, nothing exceptional. Golden / yellow color, thick white head. Smell and taste pilsener malts and grains. Low carbo and body. Decent pilsener.

22nd May 2010. ChrisOs ’Blue Ridge Mountains Of Virginia’ tasting! Clear pale gold beer. Light palate. Light creamy malt, turns a little dry in the mouth. Some hop grapefruit peeping through. Finishes light and soft. Okay.

Bottle at Chris O’s. Pours pale yellow with a white head. Pineapple, citrus aromas. Very dull nose. Some light hops, light herbs, lightweight. Even the dullest dishwater would find this stuff boring.
