Our 4% cockle stout is brewed with Leigh-on-Sea cockles in the boil (obviously a departure from our usual vegan policy!) and is our take on an Oyster Stout. It is jet black in appearance with a bright white fluffy head, and aromas of chocolate and roasted malt. The flavours are of chocolate, coffee, caramel, with a lightly roasted finish. The cockles are added towards the end of the boil, joining Magnum and Golding hops.

Renown was one of the six cockle boats from Leigh-on-Sea involved in the Dunkirk troop rescue. Renown was an Osborne Bros boat and was tragically lost on the return journey, being struck by a mine with the loss of four lives. We’re proud to help to keep the story alive with this distinctive beer and consider it highly appropriate that the cockles used come from the current day Osborne Bros business.

500ml bottle [courtesy of Grumbo, he'll make me one of the biggest shipowner on ratebeer one day - thanks Graham!]. Clear, darkest brown colour with ruby gleam and huge, firm frothy, moderately lasting, minimally lacing, off-whiet to beige head. Reather weak, minimally sweet-ish, roasty, dark malty aroma, slightly leafy and fruity hoppy overtones, hints of roast, dark chocolate, a touch of tobacco, tangerine and physalis. Taste is roasty dark malty with little residual sweetness, leafy and minimally fruity, hoppy overtones, diluted notes of dark chocolate, burnt coffee, dark cocoa, a touch of tangerine and orange zest, minimally metallic interludes. Watery texture, somehow foamy but not creamy palate, relatively coarse, slightly prickly carbonation. Lacks body for a better embedding of the roasty flavours.

Cask at Pigs Ear 2018 - London. Day 1. Pours deep red-brown with a fluffy off-white head. Some ashy roast, scorched earth, crusty leather. Meisum bodied with fine carbonation. Earthy bitter finish, some ashy roast, some astringency. So so.
