Each spring, hop growers dust off their pruning shears and trim the first shoots, bolstering the bines for a rich growing season. First Cut – a mouthful of silky Simcoe and a touch of mango – is a nod to this ritual, without which the world would be a less hoppy place.

From tap. Pours hazy orange with a small white head. Aroma is grapefruity and mellow. Crisp hoppy. Citrusy and slight peachy. Mellow fruity. Lingering hoppy and smooth fruity far finish.

Draft. Hazy golden color, white head. Mango aroma. Earthy mango taste. Not sure why you would highlight the hops then cover them with fruit.

Pours an amber, almost copper from a bottle, medium white head dissipates with little lacing. Aroma is a strong juiciness, flavor starts off similarly, I suppose it’s mango, but it’s not terribly indicative of a particular fruit. Flavor then veers off toward resin. A little thin in the mouth. Good beer.

Aroma’s sweet, hops, wet grain and paper. Flavor’s slightly more sweet than bitter, resiny. Good and finish.

From cask at Crest Tavern in Wildwood Crest, NJ. Pours medium gold with a thick creamy beige head. Subtle tropical fruit nose with a touch of caramel malt. Subdued sweet fruity malt upfront. Soft, silky mouthfeel from cask pour. Tart, dank grapefruit and pine on back end. Overall, pretty good.

12 oz. can shared by Chalumeaux. Almost clear orange color, head dried fast. Aroma is abundant in mango, pine and just a light hint of grass.

The fruit and the grass are balanced pretty well. Bitterness is on the lower end with a sweet mango finish. Medium body with a lower carbonation level. Nice brew , tastes good.

Bottle reads freshest by 06/02/17.
This was poured into a becher pint glass.
The appearance was a semi-hazy copper color with a sly transparency about it. Moderate carbonation was seen flowing to feed a quickly dissipating finger’s worth of white foamy head. Some filmy lace.
The aroma had the sweet mango pulp/juiciness up front. Caramel malt and toast amplify to blend. Sticky lingering blended mango to malty aftertaste and finish.
On the palate, this one sat about a light to medium on the body with a fair sessionability about it. Carbonation felt tame. ABV felt right.
Overall, the hops seem separated from the malts and doesn’t seem to want to combine. Troeg’s does better, what was this? Hard stare, really? And I hope I just had a bad bottle.
