Everything a good stout should be; rich, bold, roasty and deliciously smooth, but at just 4%, it's easy drinking enough to keep coming back to. Maris Otter gives a subtle biscuit base (not buttery) and layers of increasingly darker malts build up chocolate, coffee and toasty notes.

Oh, it's also gluten free.

330ml can. Pours black with a beige head, good retention. Aroma of roast malts, slightly ashy/smokey, dark chocolate, caramel. Taste of roasted malts, coffee, ashy, burnt/charred malts, caramel, chocolate, light sweet, moderate bitter. Medium bodied. That's a great low-strength stout, sessionable.

330ml can from Leith Bottle Shop. Gluten Free. My stout rating #100. Black colour, foamy beige head and aroma of roast malt, smoke, ash, chocolate, coffee, earth. Taste is sweetish, roasted, malty, ashy, with some chocolate & coffee, and earthy bitterness. Medium bodied, soft carbonation, drying roasty bitter finish. Nicely drinkable.

Cans from Against The Grain and Lupe Pintos. Black body with a thin beige head. Faint lacing. Aroma of espresso, charred wood and dark chocolate. Flavour of burnt toast and coffee with a nice bitterness on the finish. Medium body with a smooth texture. Soft fizz. This is rich and full flavoured. Punches above its 4% ABV. Pilot brew dark beers particularly well.

Can from Appellation Wines. Appearance - deep brown to mat black. Foamy, tan head. Nose - chocolate, Bourbon biscuit and sweet milky coffee. Taste - Bourbon biscuit again, creamy and sweet coffee. Palate - close to medium bodied despite the ABV, creamy with very light roast. Overall - very nice.
