This beer pours a clear ruby-amber color with a medium khaki head that recedes steadily. Partial rings of lacing on the glass. Aroma of roast malt, caramel and hops. Medium body with flavors of caramel malt, earthy hops and a bit of dark fruit. The finish is sweet with a malty aftertaste. Decent overall.

Tap at the brewpub on 3/23. Pours dark orange/amber with a slight beige head. Malty aroma. Med body. Flavor is rather heavy malt - possible touch of smoke? Or maybe a little earthy? There’s a little hop. Finishes on the non-dry side, but it drinks pretty well tho.

Draught pint at Redbones on 2/10/07
Deep orange-caramel colored body with strong strawberry-tan hints. Buttercream-colored head is medium-sized and recedes to partial cover, leaving minimal lacing behind. High clarity, very slight, glassy chill-haze.
Boisterously fruity nose entices with raspberries, strawberries, and a touch of oily caramel behind it. Breadiness and a moderate hardness follows quickly, from the malts and seems to end in a fruitiness laden with acidity. Soft vanilla sweetness, with only a bare hint of chocolate and thick caramel. Shockingly similar to their Rauchbier, though obviously minus the smoke. Much more of a red-fruity, creamy-sweet, bready scotch ale, than the more common, dark, thickly caramelized and dark-fruit-laden variety. Which is fine. Medium strength of aroma, no alcohol/flaws noted.
Peppery hops are quite notable, but, though true to style, they are almost wholly lacking in flavor, just adding bitterness and a light dusting of earthiness. With warming, light brown sugar notes emerge, with more vanilla and raspberry/strawberry flavors. Though you can tell there are some crystal malts hiding in the depths, with some slickness and hard candy-like flavor, this one is much softer-malted on the whole, than the rauchbier and the fruitiness matches well the lighter sugar notes. Dosent overwhelm you with caramel, not syrupy in the least and the breadiness is moderate for the style, with only light acidity building up on the finish. Drinkable, if, like many of their draught-only beers, rather unremarkable. Malts seem rather simple, overall, though there’s a bit of hazelnut-like roastiness in the background. I just got finished saying how I liked boring, but well-made beers, but this one dosent quite hit me the right way. Guess it’s just a little too sugary in the end. Sort of on the border between a scotch and a scottish ale.

I’ve had this on tap at a few places in the NY metro area so far, and I must say that it is a rather weak attempt at a scotch ale (the description at Barcade listed it as 6% alcohol, if that is any indication) - some chocolate and caramel make themselves present in the rather thin body, but otherwise this is a bland effort at an otherwise flavorful style.
