The thirteenth entry in our exploratory Double IPA series, Society & Solitude #13 features HBC 586, Simcoe, and Strata® hops. Developed by the Hop Breeding Co. (a joint venture between John I. Haas and Yakima Chief Ranches), HBC 586 is perhaps our favorite HBC varietal in the last decade. Strata®—a variety developed by Indie Hops via Oregon State’s Aroma Hop Breeding Program—provides a unique complexity of aromas that buttresses the qualities we enjoy most with our hand-selected Simcoe® hops.

On tap at The Publick House, pours an opaque golden orange with a small quite head—looks like a typical hazy but is it? Definitely not! Aroma reveals plenty of dank hops, along resinous hops, some pine, and big bready malt. Flavour is full of big resinous hops, moderate dankness, dough malty base, finishing moderately bitter and juicy. Excellent NE-but-not-hazy IPA.

Hazed orange golden topped with a just off white head that veers to the edge.
Nose is orange peel, grass, ripe melon, hint of mango.
Taste comprises grapefruit, pine needle, tangerine, bitter orange, grass.
Medium bodied, fine carbonation, semi drying close spiked with assertive juicy hop bitterness.
Solid well rounded DIPA.

Can (4/6/26) from Chalumeaux--thanks, TJ! Deeply hazy dark yellow, white floaties (like upside down world in Stranger Things), tons of sparkle, thin head with excellent retention and nice, soapy lacing. Aroma is strong fruit (orange, dank pineapple), pine, vague herbal undercurrent, malt base. Taste is nonspecific fruit, pine, cracker. Smooth, creamy texture, medium bodied, soft carbonation, finish as taste with dry, lingering bitterness. Aroma bests flavor. Decent.

Poured into a tulip.
Appearance: burnt orange haziness with a finger's worth of white foamy head which dissipated nicely to leave some light lace
Aroma: sweet peachy to melon to sticky pine and slightly mango-ish hop tone; super light clean malts - kinda biscuity
Flavor: combines the prior noted aromas to a fine sweet to bittersweet sort of quality; finishes peachy to mango-ish with a clean malty vibe
Texture: medium bodied; slightly sessionable; great smoothness with a superb low carb and low hop bitterness assertiveness
Overall: a very nicely done NEDIPA I would very much love to return to!

Monk's Cafe on draught: pours hazy yellow with a white. Aroma is hefty citrus and light tropical notes. Taste is tangy, somewhat bitter. Smooth. Quite nice.

Canned on 91/13/2026. Troebele goudgele body met stukjes (gist?) die erin zweven, zoals gewoonlijk. Wit hobbelig schuim met goede retentie en wandplak. Geur uit het blik is dank, harsig, en wat zoet fruit (meloen), maar uit het glas is het veel fruitiger, citrus en guave. Retronasaal is het gistig, deeg, fruitig, juicy. Smaak is zoetig en bitterig tot bitter. Medium body. Aards bittere afdronk.

Draught @ Fools Gold, Manhattan NYC (Aug 2025). Hazy dark yellow-orange like peach juice, large creamy beige head, coriander/mint-citrus aroma, adequate carbonation, medium bitter unripe mango-coriander-citrus taste, smooth body, long finish. Great flavors!

On tap @As Is. Co-worker had three of these. Hazy, sticky, deep orange honey-colored tulip pour. Looks good. Earthy, boozy, bitter orange nose. Smells good. Sweet onion, earthy pine, lots of pithy & numbing rind, light acid. Somewhat sweet, thick slurry. Okay but not my favorite. I don't like most hazies & I think I don't like Strata.

Can at home in Hackney - picked up from the brewery. Pours unclear orange-gold with a foamy, off-white head. Moderately sweet with big dank character, a little pee, some mango, tangerine, pine, pale bread, melon, orange rind. Medium to full bodied with massaging carbonation. Lightly warming finish, ample dank tropical fruits, decent bitter rind and pine. Mighty tasty.
