Prodigal is an imperial oatmeal milk stout with a massive fudge and roast malt character. It’s a foundation for some of our favorite stouts, now here to stand on its own adorned with only a handful of cacao nibs and Madagascar vanilla beans to round out the edges.

1 pint can. Pours black with full dark tan head. Aromas of creamy vanilla, roasted malts and black coffee. Flavors of syrupy chocolate, kahlua (including the alcohol), dark sugar, soy, dark vanilla, sweet roasted malts and a bit of coconut. Wonderful. This one deserves a big bottle...

Can pour into goblet from Total Wine & More, Brentwood. Appearance is opaque black with 1/2-finger width light brown cap of head with poor retention, fair sparkle at the edges of the glass and no lacing. Aroma is strong roasted malt, earth, mild cocoa and vanilla, hint of alcohol. Taste is sweet malt, light alcohol (isopropyl), mild dark fruit, and hints of cocoa/vanilla. Mouthfeel is light bodied with thin texture, smooth, frothy, pleasant deep alcohol warmth, soft-to-average carbonation and finish as taste. Overall, it is understandable how this serves as a solid base to others, but it is just OK by itself. Not getting massive fudge and kind of have to reach for the vanilla. Kind of thin.

At a tasting, smallish fizzy head, opaque blackest of black, aroma of mollases, vanila and chocolate cake, flavor of intense chocolatem, mollases, ripe plums and a hint of coffee with some spiciness coming through, quite sweet and a bit oily. Very nice and enjoyable.

Tall can from ES. Appearance: very dark brown with a beige head. Aroma: roasted malt, some chocolate. Taste: quite sweet, oily, roasted malt, black chocolate, not really much of vanilla that comes mostly at the finish when the beer is already warm. Overall: nice stuff, I wish it would have more vanilla.
