BeeReady, and it's the 'Best of Show Beer at SMASH Homebrew Competition 2024. To get the story, this is a few words from our friends from #SMASH.
'We are proud to announce that this year's best beer at the SMASH Homebrew competition was brewed by the talented Finn Markku and is headed your way. His 'Pale Czech Lager' won the hearts of the judges and the audience, and was declared the best of all submitted beers. As a prize for Best Of Show, Markku got the opportunity to brew his winning beer at the renowned Pulfer Brewery.'
Needless to say, we are very pleased that we participated in this cool project in which we exchanged brewing tips, and had a great time along the way. Special thanks to all the guys from SMASH Homebrew Competition, CroCraft, and of course to the Markku.

# 4604; 4/2025. Citrus aroma. Hazy yellow body; white head. Citrus, zesty, floral, slightly yeasty. Light body; medium carbonation. Lack of malty backbone. Interesting interpretation; closer to an oberpfälzisch Zoigls than a Bohemian Pilsner. 0,5 l, can, gift (many thanks Marko!).

In May, I've judged at the SMASH Homebrew Competition in Split, including the Best of Show, and the clear winner of the SMASH 3A Chech Pale Lager with Saaz category, and then the BoS for Dimitar, Hrabren and me, was without any doubt, Markku's entry - simply a well made, expensively made, clean, but genuineish take at the style. The organizers finally got a deal to brew the winning beer on a pro scale, and I managed to get some cans from Matejuška in Split, after almost missing out. So my expectations are high, especially knowing the effort Pulfer did to get the genuine ingredients. Did Pulfer fulfil them? Slightly hazy golden-yellow, off-white head, medium retention. Lovely floral-herbal Saaz dominates the aroma, slightly minerally otherwise, vague honeyish malty touches as it warms. Lean, dry, but soft taste, the floral-herbal Saaz absolutely dominating again, just lightly yeasty, without much bitterness, would guess closer to 15 - but hey, the recipe and the concept did force them to use Saaz for bittering, and slightly flat. Not much it terms of maltiness, slightly minerally, plays with astringency a bit, but that's borderline and it remains drinkable, and some bitterness does build up at the end of the tongue, along with a vaguely citric touch (I get the sourness mentioned by some, but it's not sour or tart as such in any way, the hops mimic it). Too lean, too dried out, the vague grainy maltiness plays no role here, and with the too soft/flat seeming taste, it edges it away from top tier status. It's a solid, drinkable take but as with many non-Czech Czech beers - it's noooot quite there.

Can, 0.5l. Cloudy yellow pour, one finger soapy white head, medium lasting, broken lacing on the glass. Nice on the nose, clean and crisp, herbal and grassy notes, citruses in the background. Light floral touches. Light body, lively carbonation. Smooth mouthfeel and texture, soft, lightweight, fizzy. Refreshing and easily drinkable. Nicely balanced bittersweet taste with subtle citrus sour notes in the background. Aroma of malt, grains, grass and spice. Lemon, citrus peel, minerals. Bready notes. Medium lasting finish, light tart, dry, lingering hop bitterness. Tasty.

0.5 l can, shared with PBF_korica at Spicy Days, Zagreb. Clear pale golden, small off-white head. Aroma is a good balance of bready malts and Saaz-type hops, floral and lightly herbal. Clean. Light body, moderate carbonation, soft creaminess, not cloying, no astringency, very clean fermentation profile. Flavour is grainy, bready, herbal and moderately bitter. Very good balance. Lasting dry finish, crisp and drinkable. I remember judging this beer at the competition, enjoying it very much and awarding a medal for it, it is how I remember it, which only means the recipe is great but also the brewers at Pulfer who brewed it. I am proud of you all.
