This beer is a Wonder of the World. Bombastic Brewing pulled out all the stops to make this beer, featuring an incredible brewing process.

The Adambier style originated in Dortmund, Germany, and is said to have put the hard drinking King Frederick William IV of Prussia under the table. It’s a malt forward beer, showing the complexities of the malt character.

In the brewing process, we boiled down the wort until it was a wort syrup, the paddle would slowly drip with the wort which became the consistency of maple syrup. At this stage the wort was caramelized, which starts the maillard reaction.

This reaction is the same one that gives steak it’s sizzle. This chemical reaction between amino acids and reducing sugars gives browned food its distinctive flavor, and makes this beer brandy like.

To do this we had to boil for 8 times longer than our standard boil. This means it is an expensive beer to make, as it takes tremendous grain, labor and fuel compared to other beers.

Additionally we used a judicious amount of the traditional peat smoked malt to impart a subtle presence of smokiness. This isn’t a full on smoke beer like a Rauchbier, it’s more of a subtle whiff of a fine scotch.

This beer is all about the malt, but we do add a nice hop spice to the beer as well.

Tavour: dark brown with beige head. Aroma is toasted caramel with some nice smokiness. Taste is smokey, but not overly so. Sweet, but jot cloying. Malty. Booze is well covered. Quite good.

Can from Tavour. Pours dark brown with a moderate creamy tan head. Aroma of dark malt and treacle. Arguably full bodied. Flavor is roasty darkmalt, treacle, a lot of medium dark plummy fruit aspects (tho not fruit), and a light touch of peat. Heat is barely detectable. Overall in a blind tasting I might call it a plummy quad. Excellent.

16 ounce can from Tavour. Opaque dark brown pour. Frothy tan head. Sweet, smoky dark malt aroma. Flavor is rich and flavorful. Dark roasted malt, smoke, treacle, warming alcohol. Incredibly smooth for such a big beer. Steveoj has it right; it’s like a Rauchbier and a Altbier rolled up together. Maybe a bit of a Wee Heavy and a thrown in as well. At 14% ABV, this is deceptively strong. A rare rare treat and a rare style. Outstanding!

16oz can from Brewers Haven. Dark brown pour, one finger beige foamy head. Nutty, smoky aroma, sweet notes. Taste is malty, sweet, nutty, smoky, strong. Like an altbier and a rauchbier, rolled up together, but throw in some Barleywine on top. Strength is apparent if not immediately noticeable. Sweet, toasty, woody, ashy. Love it!

Original 2017 rating. Bomber from the brewery. Aroma is nutty and caramelly like good cashew brittle; it's a bit fudgy, some raisin. Pours dark dark brown with a thin collar of beige foam. Taste is sweet, never cloying, finishing with a light bitterness; flavor notes of the aroma, along with a significant black licorice character and a light earthiness. The high ABV is hidden extremely well. Low carbonation, oily mouthfeel. Very tasty drink here, but it would be absolutely awesome with a little more carbonation. 8,3,8,3,17=3.9

10/12/24 rating. 16 oz contract brewed can. Aroma is smoky, dried dark fruit, caramel. Pours dark brown with a thin bone-white head that falls into a ring fairly quickly. Taste is sweet, smoky, and slightly spicy. Like a strong Rauchbier, although the ABV is fairly well masked. 8,4,8,4,18=4.2
