On tap at Ebenezers, Crewe. Pours almost black with a small foamy tan head and excellent lacing. There’s roasted malts, coffee and chocolate in the aroma plus some hints of dried apricots. In the mouth it is sweet with a little underlying sharpness. Flavours are roasted malts, gingerbread, cocoa and honey with traces of smoke and toffee coming through late. Sweetness lasts into the slightly dry finish. This is nice – a good solid no nonsense stout.

A 440ml. can purchased online from Beautiful Beers while on a recent visit home, and drunk here in Taipei. Aroma: fresh grass, nothing besides. Appearance: opaque cola, one finger tan head. Palate: light-bodied, and oily, average carbonation; roasted finish with an unexpected salty hit. Taste: lightly sweet, the roast seems understated, not sure what to make of the salt. Pretty average, the aroma is a mystery - something wrong?
